I recently picked up a Line6 Guitarport, and the one thing that puzzles me is whether or not I can monitor what I play through Ableton Live. I have no problem with my USB keyboard, but I can't hear the Guitarport.
If I connect an audio cable from the PC to the Guitarport then attach speakers to the Guitarport, no problem, but is there a way to monitor it from within Live?
I've tried just about anything I can think of, and can't find anything on the Line6 or Ableton sites.

Is your guitarport ASIO driver installed?
In the Guitarport app there are three volume pots up in the right hand corner. Rec send level, guitar and computer. Fiddle with those...

I don't have a guitarport, so I can't say "how," but yes, it is possible.

I can record from the guitarport, but the only way I can do it is to route the sound card's output back to the guitarport then connect speakers to the guitarport.
That's how the manual suggests setting it up for the guitarport app, but if I just connect the GP to the USB port open Live and try to play I get nothing, even when I set up a track to route the output to the master as it's played.
I just don't get it...??? I'm getting extra latency by sending the guitar to the GP, then that to Live, then the output to the soundcard, then the output of that back to the GP, then outputting that to speakers. I just don't understand why I can't listen to the output of the sound card. It doesn't seem to make sense.

Why are you using the GP to monitor at all? That does incur a performance hit.
What kind of sound card do you have?
Back when I owned the GP I simply hooked the outputs of the GP to my soundcard since it was my only source of sound. You can also route it through a small hardware mixer. I had to do this because FL Studio 4 didn't let me choose the GP Asio for recording.
However, in Live you should be able to activate the GP Asio as an input and then record from that. Look at Options -> Preferences -> Audio and make sure that your GP Asio is selected as an active Input device. That should work. Also make sure you set monitoring to "On" on the track which you are using of course.

This is not desirable and should not be necessary, since you then bypass all the track functions and can't add further effects etc on your track. I guess I could route the GP back to my soundcard, but as it is getting the output from my soundcard anyway, that seems like a pointless round trip. I'm just not sure why it doesn't output from Live direct to the soundcard O/P.

Let me repeat: Have you enabled it as a device in Live's preferences?

Can you please describe the process you are following? How is your GP connected to the PC? A screendump of your Audio prefs in Live? A screendump of the track settings for the track where you're trying to monitor GP?

Let me give you the whole scenario.
I have a USB keyboard, and when I connect it to the PC and work with Live, I can hear what I'm playing when I click the monitor button for that track. I assumed I could do the same with the GP.
However, when I connect the GP and I click the monitor button for that track, I hear nothing. If I try to record Live records what I play, but I can't hear the guitar while I'm playing.
If I connect the audio out from my soundcard to the GP, then connect speakers to the GP, I can hear GP when I click on the monitor button for the track. If I record, I can hear the backing track/click track and the guitar.
I have no problem recording, I just can't monitor the guitar unless I route the soundcard's output to the GP.
I can't show you any prefs from Live as I am at work and don't have access to it. I might not be able to tonight either, but I might be able to tomorrow.

Okay. Keep in mind that you are dealing with two things:
1) Your MIDI keyboard uses the soundcard in your PC and the VST you are using on that track. In Live, you are using a MIDI track.
2) Your GuitarPort uses it's built-in software to generate sound, and therefore must be recorded via an audio track. If you can *record* into Live, but not monitor it, I suspect that the problem lies in Live and not in GP.

I checked the Ableton forum, but no one really gave the answer that I was looking for - they just suggested sending the output to the GP, which I'm trying to avoid. I posted my own question, so I'll see what that turns up.
