ugh sampletank.

Well, I wouldn't personally pay for Sampletank, but I do have the free version on my pc. I don't see any reason in buying a sampler (in the case of sampletank, it seems more like a rompler to me. a Rampler, if you will) that doesn't allow you to edit hardly any of the parameters. Apart from some basic filters, effects and the ability to stack presets.

MOTU Ethno instrument and Sampletank... hehe... we have an audio masochist on our hands, folks.

No, seriously, I would avoid MOTU Ethno instrument like the plague if I were you. It uses the same engine as Symphonic Instrument and everyone by now knows how I feel about that piece of garbage. It also uses PACE iLok which can be dangerous for your computer.

The Yammaha Motifs, Korg Tritons, or the Roland Fantoms. Anyone of these come with great sounds and allows you expand on top of them...

I've been down the same road...

I forgot to mention. Im not into electronica nor do I enjoy or need nor have time to edit sounds and parameters for hours. The sound of my music is defined by my guitar playing, the rest is arrangements of bass, strings, pads, ethnic sounds. Does this change your answer somewhat? Didnt see any comments on Spectrasonics

I do mostly R&B(maybe the only one here). I have only used Spectrasonics RMX 1.5. The sounds do not sit the mix well. I had to spend so much time eqing the durms, I finally gave up and sold it.

I found that for my music the Triton Extreme offered the best balance between instant gratification and creativity.

You might want to look into Hypersonic 2 or Luxonix Purity, too.

I like the sound of Spectrasonics Atmosphere, but I don't have any real experience with using them.

I have a Korg Karma and I hate the manual and spending hours trying to edit the shitty strings.
I have a Roland XV3080 which I plan on selling. Its awash with effects

You can very easily turn off the FX of your Roland, you know, by hitting the Utility button (or something similar) and turning a knob to set the reverb, MFX and chorus to off.

I know I can turn on effects :) But try surfing in that 1 inch display with a amnual in your lap for 2 hours and then trying to get Ableton Live to make recognize the patches by name

Once you go soft, you might have to pay transfer fees on them if you want to sell them. Just something to be aware of.
