Let me explain:

I am looking to play my voice or a talent's voice in real time, like a vocoder. But, instead of making me sound like a robot or phasing the crap out of me (or whatever), the plugin would then take that voice and depending on the keys I am playing, would then adjust the vocals in realtime to sound like the notes I am playing. Hence, a 'c' chord would sound like 3 people singing 'c', 'e' and 'g'. Bass notes would correspond to males singing lower notes (or females) and vice versa.

Does anything on the planet exist like this?

Akai DecaBuddy can do this but it's not made any longer and I don't know if it's still possible to download the updater(s) for the Akai VSTs.

Elevayta's Choir Boy might do what you want.

[edit] Oh, yes, for really sophisticated manipulation you could use Melodyne. The version I have wouldn't do it in real time though, making one voice into a chorus would be a separate step.

The key is the keys - I need to be able to play chords and a resulting choir + plus my voice - it's advanced pitch shifting and, yes, melodyne's way of preserving tone would be key as well.

Choirboy looks interesting - just not sure if it does it in realtime - I guess I'll give it a whirl.

I heard an interview with Imogen Heap where she stated she did exactly what you want to do in her song "Hide and Seek". She said she used a certain "effect unit" to accomplish this, however she didn't say what it was, or whether or not it was software or hardware. She indicated it was done in real time. If you can find out what it is, you're there. Please let us know if you do.

Just found this in a quote from Imogen Heap about "Hide and Seek": "Out of the corner of my eye i spotted my harmonizer (a little box that you hook up to a keyboard via midi so you can play in the notes you want your voice to transpose to in real time)." However, as you can see, still no brand name. I'll keep trying. It probably has a software equivalent.

Might've been the original hardware Akai Decabuddy, the one that really did provide up to ten ("deca") output voices. The VST version I have gives up to five outputs, including the original voice. Both are called "harmonizers."

Found it! It's this: Digidesign Vocalist Workstation EX. Supposedly, it's 90's technology and you can find a used one dirt cheap. However, maybe there's a software equivalent somewhere.

peter01, Yes, that would definately do the job. Unfortunately, I would bet that most of us don't have a spare $3K laying around. Too bad, because that thing is cool! Well, off to win the lotto. By the way, if any devs are following this thread could you make one of these in software form preferably for free. Thanks. LOL!

My Eventide DSP-4000 can do scales in key and chords. Granted, buying its equivalent H7600 ULTRA-HARMONIZER new will set you back pretty significantly. The Eventide was pretty smooth at the pitch shift up to about 500 cents. More extreme sounded less natural. Not sure how much they've improved the nwer units, but I'm pretty darn sure they've made progress in the 10 years since I bought the DSP-4000 new.

I owned a Digidesign Vocalist workstation EX - it really never worked for me well - too chipmunk and freddy krueger going on.

I am looking for a software only solution.

What's wrong with actually recording somebody that sings? Layer three or four takes, and you have all the harmonies you want, sounding astonishing natural. Easy, not?

Thanks. Own it. Love it. It does not do vocoder-like choir effects - it does choir effects. Namely, you can not play it like a vocoder.

BertKoor - because this particular need is not for a recording session. If it was for a talent's recording session, yes, I would multitrack if I needed to.

Perhaps this is more a question for the instruments forum - maybe this needs to be a weird form of sampling synth married to a vocoder married to clone ensemble, choir boy or the like???
