I'm a newbie mixer, so I've been reading and watching as much as I can on the subject. Recently, Ive been watching David Gibson's "The Art of Mixing" DVD (as a side note: the man's mullet is hilarious)... Its come to my attention that I have no idea how to pan _only the FX_ of a certain instrument. As an example, he speaks frequently about panning a guitar track to one side of the mix and adding its less than 30ms delay to the other side... which he calls fattening the track. Other examples include panning reverb, chorusing etc...

Im currently using a DAW and my sequencer is Sonar 5. My problem is I have no idea how to separate my effects from my track... I see it as one 'bundle'. I was thinking about possible solutions and I thought, well I could easily just duplicate the track, pan it to the other side and then add the FX... but that wouldnt be the same, it still not the FX in isolation.

This approach is achievable in modern daws pretty easily. You render a fx track (WET = 100) in a different track and pan it, change volume, make automations....
Someone could say: "ehi, but if you render you can't change your fx any more". But here you are mixing (the last 8-hour step before mastering), I suppose you are pretty satisfied with you chosen fx, here you are simply
1) equalizing
2) choosing fx
3) panning
4) changing levels
5) compressing something here and there

before mastering
That book describes the last step = the mixing stage before mastering.

Use a buss...

Send the PreFader siganl to a buss, and put the desired effect in it's channel, set fully wet.

You can then pan the dry signal (normal channel) to where you want it; and the wet signal (buss) where it needs to go :)

For exact details, see your host documentation.

If you just want to use delay.. go get Computer Music, and use 'The Vascillator' - it can separate off the input signal and pan it separately to the processed on :)
