vw is great. check out also the nomad factory analog suite.....it's like 229 at http://www.dontcrack.com/ or they are like 129 each.

First, I still use the PSP Vwarmer all the time, that one is timeless.

BUt I also second Voxengo Lampthruster, I have only demoed it, but that has some interesting power..

Just my opinion, but if you are interested in something that sounds more like what you would expect from tube preamps, you should probably give Aleksey's Lampthruster a go.

In the realm of native DSP "hardware" emulations, at least the ones I have taken the trouble to observe, this one comes the closest to simulating the general behavior of such analog circuits. And it is wonderfull for shaping the general character of your sound. It can be extremely subtle, or in your face brash, or anything inbetween.

*Lots* of sounds under the hood with this one. Fine tool.
