don't know if any of you were aware of this - but read this today:

BTW, is PG still working on the album of unused "Up" tracks?

I know, it's great news that the band is getting back together. I wasn't sure if that was something made public or not... but since it is I guess I can say that what's even cooler for me is that I am actually working with Genesis now. In fact, at this point pretty much all Genesis members past and present (including Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel) are using IK software and Sonic Reality sounds. I made a custom version of Miroslav Philharmonik for Tony to use on a Receptor which I suggested he get (KVR you OWE me! lol) and I am custom tweaking SampleTank and Sonik Synth as well for him, maybe some stuff on the Korg Oasis too. Sonic Reality is also doing this thing with Korg coming up where we'll be releasing a cool sound or two for the OASIS each month but that's completely separate from the Genesis thing.
Btw, I know it is three months away or so but we're going to have some cool performances at the SR booth featuring Studio Profile artists like NDV and Jerry Marotta (possibly with Tony Levin). I might even get Phil's son Simon who I became friends with to come out (he plays drums and sings too).
Oh lastly on the ranting Genesis/Gabriel subject, I saw the Tony Levin Band at the House of Blues in LA a week ago. It was really cool! They opened for Porcupine Tree. Anyway, I got to meet Lary Fast for the first time and we had a great chat about the old keys he used with Peter Gabriel. I was surpised how much of it was modular synths. The San Jacinto sound was just a marimba pitched up in the Fairlight... stuff like that. Hey, you guys know me! I am a sound freak! Haha.
Hope you enjoy the Genesis stories. I'll have more to tell as things progress (npi).

Is there any chance they could return the favour and make you some Sonic Synth patches?!

It's the other way around. I am making patches for them. What you'd really want is all of Tony's samples of his instruments that I am putting into SampleTank for him. However, just like a lot of custom programming gigs that material is not available to the public for sale (unless of course it is part of the Studio ProFile series like the Keith Emerson samples etc. It's up to Tony really... not like he needs the money though).
Yeah, I think there's still a chance Pete will do it in the future though. In the meantime it is still great that Phil is back with Genesis and watching them play together was just incredible. Surreal.

It's good that this is happening.. question is tho' was the material any good? I mean, whilst Invisible Touch and the like are technically good recordings, and have a certain charm... but is what they were playing more on a par with the later 70's/early 80's stuff; or more toward the later 80's/ 90's stuff? The latter has had some high points, (Domino, Fading Lights..) they are fewer and further between than they were with ATTWT, ABACAB, etc..
And if they could get Steve involved as well, now that would be worth every penny

So no Hackett then?
And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Nope. But I did talk to Tony about Steve. He said he went to see one of Steve's shows and thought it was really good. Some day.Kim Olesen wrote:So no Hackett then?
As far as the music, all I can say is it sounds really good!

Squids,
Wow, what a thrill. Man, I'm excited for you, what an honor to work for a band that had such an influence on you. It obviously speaks to the reputation you've earned, so I hope you're feeling good. On another level, you have to feel like a kid in a candy store (of course, with audio being the candy).
So, Squids, I think you know that I am a huge 70s Genesis Fan (Yes and other progressive bands too, but especially Genesis). I absolutely love the Gabriel days and wish he was joining the others, but I also love some of the albums with Phil on vocals, like And Then Were Three, Wind and Wuthering, Duke, Abacab and Three Sides Live -- right up until Invisible Touch, where they completely lost me. Phil's drumming was brilliant in the 70s. Tony's keyboard work has always been great -- what an imagination. Do you know if they are going to be performing their 70s progressive material on the reunion tour? Also, do you know who will be drumming. You'll probably passionately disagree, but I never enjoyed Chester with them live (Bruford is brilliant) -- don't get me wrong, Chester's a very good drummer, but his playing with Genesis was boring and uninspired; same will Darryl Steurmer. I think Nick DiVirgilio would be the perfect drummer for the live shows -- he is an awesome drummer (and he was on their "Calling All Stations," right?). The drumming I've heard from Nick reminds me of Phil during his prime. That would be an awesome show.

P.S. If you're wondering where I've been, I had a son, working on a book coming out next year and lots of other things. I'll be back playing and recording after I complete the book in 2007.

Okay since that's announced officially, publicly etc. I suppose I can show you guys this!!!!!

I got to watch the rehearsals. All I can say is WOW! I even stood behind Phil's kit with his son Simon while Phil played. It was MONSTEROUS! This tour is going to be awesome. I can't say which tunes they are going to play but let's just say that the old classics are going to be sweet! Also, the sounds will be good! I am doing some of them.
If you look in the background you can see a Receptor in the rack.
It is running Sonik Synth, SampleTank and Miroslav Philharmonik!
After rehearsals were done the engineer needed to check the sound so I sat at Tony's rig and played classic Genesis (even The Lamia which none of them had heard in a million years, it was funny). I took a few shots behind the keys just to be a genegeek. Check it out:

I've done a lot of gigs in my time but this one has to be the coolest one for me I think. Not just because I love the music but everyone is really nice, funny and down to Earth. What a blast that was (as you can imagine). Your pal Squids is lucky sometimes.
