I'm not sure where to start looking for this (actually I did look but couldn;t find one anywhere).

Is there a VSTi/DXi that takes audio and draws pretty pictures rather like windows media player. I'm looking for something I cna strap acros the mains out and get some pretty graphics to display.

HMm,

Looked promising but has development not stopped on that program ? can't see a VSTi verion either unless I'm missing something.

VSt plugins are mostly about getting a sound. Not for eye candy...
But there used to be something to route the output to WinAmp (which can do the visualization) if I'm not mistaken...

Whorld lets you link up it's parmeters with MIDI, so you could control the way the visuals are generated with MIDI output from your audio host.
