Here's my situation and how I'm hoping a host can possibly make it easier:
- Many of my songs have a lot of time signature changes.
- When composing and collaborating, i constantly have to take section out, change legths of others, add new ones, etc.
- So, what I would like is a host that can:
- allow editing of tempo changes along the timeline, not in a separate window, so that I can immediately see where the tempo change is in relation to the ausio and MIDI tracks.
- when I need to move sections around, I'd like to be able to have the tempo move along with the chunk of the tune I'm in.
The closest so far is Tracktion, but it's getting to be too time consuming. Cubase/Nuendo is out, as far as I last checked, it involved opening up a track event list, which was completely seperate from the edit view. You have to type in start and end locations manually, which is the furthest from what I need.
Can Live 6 or Sonar 6 do this, maybe? eXT? Reaper?
Which host has easiest tempo change features?

For me its EnergyXT. You assign an envelope to the meter and tempo of a sequencer, and then you can create "clips" in the same way as you would midi clips or audio clips or regular envelopes. That means that you can simply copy and paste your time signature changes, and the bars adjust to display that as well.
You can put this track at the top of the sequencer or in a folder to hide it or wherever you want inside the sequencer.
You can also use a marker track to "collate" clips together on each track... thus you can include a tempo clip in with those. So when you select the marker for a particular section, it CAN select the drums, guitars, bass, and any other part specific to that section... then you can really easily copy and paste it or delete it all if you want. It's a little tricky to understand, but once you do it a few times it becomes very easy to do.

The last time I investigated this, I heard about something odd with the click track and tempo changes...that it still clicks with every fourth beat accented even if it's in 7/8? I suppose that can be worked around fairly sufficiently...
I think I'm gong to have to give this a try!

Yes, unfortunately that is the case. The way I get around it is by using a sampler with two sounds for the downbeat and the rest of the beats, and then I just duplicate a metronome sequence as I need it. Takes a little longer to setup than should be required, but ... when in Rome...

If you are planning on recording long takes that cross tempo changes, eXT is unfortunately not the way to go. There's a fairly annoying bug that makes playback of wavs go all out of sync if you start playback in a different tempo than the one the wav starts in. you can work around it by slicing audio at tempo changes, but this doesn't work if you are using tempo fades instead of abrupt changes. it's a shame really, because the tempo/meter implementation kicks some serious ass otherwise.

Hopefully XT2 will fix that, with that and the correct metronome accents it would be killer...

Live 6 will certainly allow for a lot of what you want, although not always implemented in exactly the way you might ask/expect...
Tempo changes are automated in the Arrangment View on the Master channel within the timeline, so you could certainly "check" that box.
Regarding moving stuff, one cool thing in Live's Session View (which is where you would tend to work prior to completing an arrangment)... you can arrange your sections of the song into horizontal "Scenes", and you can build into the picture tempo changes for each scene simply by renaming a scene (for example) 120 bpm. When you launch that scene, the global tempo automatically switches to 120 bpm.
The area on your list where Live is weak though is the Time Signature changes. You can do as many as you want of course, but they do not exactly show up as such on the Arrangment View timeline, only within Clips.
