i'm just trying to keep some rappers and softsynths down so they don't f**k up my speakers without having to ride the faders, whats good for this prefferable free but if it's good quality and cost that's cool too. also should I put it on the individual tracks or the master?

oh i forgot to mention that it's important that the sound doesn't get changed i'm only trying to keep things down so my speakers don't get messed up

What you want is a compressor. FreeG's good for adjusting and monitoring levels like a mixer; but it will not prevent clipping. You want a compressor or limiter.

What's your setup?

why does everyone think its a limiter?

well compressing will change the sound won't it...? I just want to limit the clipping and keep everything in the safe zone

Because, in its KVR Database listing, FreeG is listed in the "Dynamics (compressor/Limiter)" category.

A limiter is a compressor, stale bread; and to make 100% sure that no signal will go over a certain amount is to use a compressor. There's nothing wrong or unusual about using a compressor on the input of a mic; I do this with all voice overs at work, and that's just to catch the peaks from coughing and laughing; usually the compessor isn't doing squat.

If your singer is always clipping the mic, you gotta try to get him/her to back off during the loud parts. But you should run a mild compressor/limiter on the input; this is the reason compressors were made in the first place!

There are tons of good limiters to choose from. W1, Gcomp, Gmax, Kjaerhus Classic...just insert those on your input channel and forget about it. You just need the compressor to reduce the peak by a decent amount once it crosses a threshold. If you set it properly, it won't really "change" the sound, or if it does, it'll be a lot better than digital distortion!

i've found the best thing you can possibly do to start is to make sure you're recording at 24 bit. that's a must! second to that, yeah, compressor on input but careful not to have settings too intense cause you'll want to use software comps/limiters too i should assume.
