Cubase VST 32 Midi program change issue

My issue is I dont understand how to insert program changes in Cubase. I am a novice to beginner user.
My problem is, when I select a VST instrument, assign a Midi Channel and select a patch that I like, after I record the part, it somehow defaults to a different patch, often the first one in the list of factory presets for that particular VST instrument.
I first tried recording realtime patch changes. (by hitting record in the transport and quickly opening the VST edit panel and making changes.)
When that didnt work, I opened List edit to look for program change events, but none show up. (only note, aftertouch, velocity, etc..)
How do you make a program change patches so it plays the patch that you want it to ?
