Is it possible to freeze only the effects in cubase sx3?

hmmm that doesnt make sense to me. Maybe it would be possible to make an IR of it but i'm still kinda confused about what you mean.

Ok, I have tracks loaded and I call up the F11 vst instruments box and go to where I have ez drums. My drum track has alot of effects plugins etc). The upper left side of the box is the star that I click and it gives me the freeze instrument options where I can either freeze instrument only, or freeze instrument and channels (which I don't want to do because it will disable my ability to record my drums while frozen. I thought if there was a way to only freeze the reverb lets say and a ssl compressor, I would still be able to record but using less cpu and still enjoy the effects while recording in real time. Make sense?

Maybe you could put the effects, as inserts, on a submix channel, route the audio tracks into the submix, and then just freeze the submix channel?

Just render the pieces as loops. With huge HDs and RAM, there is no reason not to. At least to my way of working. You can always leave the VSTi and it's MIDI data in place, in case you want to change something later, and just turn them off to save CPU.
I've got a dual core machine and I always render the parts out as loops. I actually go the opposite route of you, and render VSTis but leave some effects, like reverb and delay, live. I do so because I like having CPU headroom, and I am always changing my VSTi collection so, in the past, I would go back to projects that were missing VSTis that it needed. I also find that once I've gotten the instrumental part down, the effects are what I prefer to fine tune and tinker with anyway.

Good luck.

Seconded on the effects side of things. I often find that once I've got the actual recording itself, I rarely feel like it needs changing. But effects... they are always changing for me... I try various combinations to see what works, but for the most part, the affected signal stays the same.

I don't know if you guys are just stringing this dope along or what but its completely and utterly impossible to freeze just the effects for a track. Think about it, what comes out of the effect is totally dependant on what is fed into it so if you change the input, the output must also change. OTOH, you can freeze a synth just fine as it has no input, just output.
Chase got it right, if you want to take your effects out of the CPU loop, just create an IR from them. Trouble is, a good real-time IRP will probably use just as much CPU, unless you're using ORION Platinum, so you're skrewed either way.

Listen to Bones. You cannot freeze effects if the input is going to change. You will have reverb and delay for hits that no longer exist and dry hits that stick out like NIN at a opera.
You could try composing dry. It is a good practice that forces you to really play well. Once you have the part the way you like it, then add effects.

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

You answered my question straight to the point.BONES wrote:I don't know if you guys are just stringing this dope along or what but its completely and utterly impossible to freeze just the effects for a track.
Calling me a dope for asking seems a bit ignorant since you don't know me though.

Its an expression, get over it. And from where I stand it was a really dopey question.
