record overdubs into separate tracks?

Is there such a feature in any of the hosts out there? I'm talking about predominantly when doing bvs. Here's what I mean:

Create a 4 bar loop, and have it looping.

Press record.

After the first take (first time through the loop), the host automatically goes to the next track and records there.

If it doesn't exist, it should.

Sonar has an option to do so, though I don't use it anymore since they integrated tracklayers. I am sure there are other hosts as well.

I believe this is how Pro Tools does it, no?

Tracktion does it in a more 'compact' way:

Set your 4-bar loop (for example... obviously it can be any length).
Press Record
Each subsequent "pass" stores subsequent takes into the same 'clip' and adds a little "+" icon to the clip.
Press the "+" to select which take you're listening to.

You can then simply copy and paste that clip to separate tracks if need be, and select a different take for each of the new copied clips. But, if it's for making composite takes, it's much easier to leave on one track. You just split the clip, and each new "chunk" can be any of the passes. Overlap the edges, auto cross-fade, and bickity-bam, composite take done.

It's really quite simple, but I suspect screenshots or a flash video would help.

Yeah, I know, that works really well for comping, but it's annoying having to do all that for separate tracks - interesting that Sonar does it.

If you're recording 50 tracks one after the other, it'd be great to have them automatically assigned to separate tracks. Even working the way Tracktion currently works, wouldn't it be nice if you could (for example) right click the "+" icon and select a "put all takes on different tracks" option? For me, anyway

Samplitude does something really cool where you set up 4 markers... preroll, "postroll", punch in and punch out.

It'll record right there in place beween the "punch" markers then let you drop down a list of takes to choose from or just grab em from that folder and toss em around.

REAPER has a "Explode All Takes to New Tracks" option that allows you to do that:

Yeah REAPER really rocks for this stuff.

ableton Live does it this way.... in the arrange view select a punchin time but no punch out time and set the loop brackets for how long you want and it'll record over and over until you stop, then you just have to unfold the track

And the unfolding is just a button click, and it puts all the takes into separate tracks?

I personally think it's trivial to do, even the existing way. It's literally a matter of seconds, not minutes. BUT! I still think it's a cool FR. +1 here.
