Does anyone know a tool very similar to Spatty which takes less CPU?

I just want to control the Mid and Side Gain Control, if possible turn it further down than -26db (as Spatty does), maybe disable side and have a pure mono signal which can be panned. Spatty is great but is too CPU intensitive (around 7%) per track. Any freeware or commercial plugin you know of? Thanks for your suggestions!

Good choice kilroy...

I'm using MSED in Reaper v1.32 right now and (if the perf indicators are valid) MSED eats about 0.23% cpu (Laptop Pentium-M)...

Incidently...if you want to give M/S equalizing a go, simply chain one MSED set to Encoder, followed with any EQ that offers separate control for left/right processing, followed finally with another MSED set to Decoder.

Unstrap the EQ from stereo linked operation, and use the left EQ filters to shape the mid channel, and the right EQ filters to shape the side channel.

You can use the MSED volume controls for M/S balance, or if your EQ of choice has left/right input/output volume faders, you can use them for the same.

Cool tip kilroy! My main EQ is Equium (before Roger Nichols) which luckily supports stereo EQ'ing, it works great! Cool stuff kilroy, takes the whole mixing process to a new level to me

You can have a look at our website, we have several Mid/Side equalizers with virtual center control (see the "Widening" products)

Soon a Mid/Side MIDI controllable plug-in as well but it's a secret...

Is it technically possible after the signal has been split up to MS, to lets say pan the M 20% left and move the S to 50% right? I'd really love to change the M pan.

Without hearing what you've got or what you're going for here's a guess anyway. Things can start gettin messy fast and the ears can get used to it too - so having a good ref to A/B against helps me. THe tools I have used for this kind of thing are:
PSP Stereo Controller (Rotate & pan various elements)
C_SuperStereo (L/R rotate)
BetaBugs PhaseBug (nice stereo phase repair & sheen)
Soniformer (MB Width)
Voxengo MSED (ms encoder/decoder)
L/R/M/S type EQ
Elemental IXL Stereo Meter (sanity check)
ED: Forgot Voxengo SPAN (sanity check)

It's kinda hard to explain in a short post but those are some useful tools for the approach I've taken. Depending on how much of what freq element I need shifted across the stereo field I'll use a L/R eq peaking filter (Kjaerhus GEQ-7 for example) and shift the bass or hi mids or something by adjusting the Right-only or Left-only band. PLParEQ3 does a fine job of this also. Other times I might just narrow the width of the bass using Soniformer. I stopped using the PSP Stereo Controller because I usually ruined things - shifting bands around using an EQ or MB Width is what I like now...looking for other ideas here also...

You can adjust the center channel image using the following configuration:

Load two instances of any source you wish to work on into a multitrack application and run them as parallel tracks. Insert an instance of MSED into each track and set both to Inline. Turn the Side Gain off on the MSED inserted on the first source track...this will now be the center channel. Turn the Mid Gain off on the MSED inserted on the second source track...this will now be the side channel.

To move the center image, simply adjust the track pan control for the center channel source. Bear in mind that all frequency information in that center channel will be moved. If you attempt to "pan" the side channel you will quickly see that you will not get quite the results you may be hoping for.
