A recording buddy of mine was "showing off" that in a Digidesign magazine, something like 99 of the top 100 albums on the chart were produced with Pro Tools (the other "one" being unknown).

I am trying to make the case for pro sound withOUT Pro Tools and I am wondering if anyone knows of any releases by more known bands or solo artists that did NOT use P/T AT ALL during production and mixing. (Mastering is fine since that would probably be outsourced anyway.)

I am just wondering so I can "give them a listen" so to speak. I think one or more of Kylie's were done with Cubase, but honestly I don't know of any others just not being at all familiar with dtudio production.

Methinks the Top 100 albums was slightly skewed in their favor.

Yeah, I know the obvious non-biasness certainly does NOT apply...but it did get me to thinking who DOESN'T use the "hogh holy" Pro Tools and is it really necessary anymore due to generic hardware able to do 24/192 and something like Sonarx64 might just do the same thing quality-wise.

I know that all the producers KNOW Pro-Tools...but if suddenly every producer in the world got amnesia, I am wondering what they would REALLY choose given all that is currently out on the market.

What on earth are you trying to gain from such a petty argument? Of coarse a "pro" sound can be achieved without Pro Tools. Currently, it's the de facto standard for recording, but that certainly doesn't mean that other apps can't provide similar results.

I am using mainly Logic and sometimes Cubase and DP. But I do all my audio recording editing and mixing in PT HD. For me Protools is the most straight ahead for audio editing and mixing.And also the easiest on the eye. And as someone said it became the big studio standart just like SSL.

I started out with Pro24 ( long time ago now ), then onto Cubase/VST & working with Cubase SX now.
The people I was working with back then used both Pro24 & Cubase to produce 3 Albums ( Which I know charted here in the UK ).
I tried Pro Tools a few years back... Didn't like the fact that it had no loop cycle.
Stayed with VST. Maybe I needed to give it a bit more time???
Eitherway, SX does the job for me.

I'll probably be doing my album in Acid. Loads most of the same 3rd party plugins as PT, and gives me more tracks than LE or M-Powered.

Well, I suspect he knows what he likes and therefore knows what he's talking about. I for one disagree and think Kanye's tracks sound great.

Yeah, I still hear MC Hammer on the radio all the time. It's music of lasting and permanent quality. Kanye's music is just as vital and important. All of them, classics to be cherished forever.

Production techniques and lasting artistic quality are two different matters. Though I'm being sarcastic about the quality, I'm sure that his music is well produced... like so much other corporate plastic assembly line crap. However, I don't think people, other than die hard fans, will be listening to him 10-20 years from now.

Any NON-ProTools hit records?
