Hey there, I saw a screenshot for Waves Doubler the other day. Looks essentially quite simple. Has anyone done a freeware version, or maybe a Reaktor ensemble for something similar?

I'm on the lookout for something I can use on backing vocals, and possibly on handclaps too

Not too sure if this'l work but you could give it a go! Get Gsnap http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2192.html.. Create a duplicate of your vocals.. Use a short delay with no feedback and kill the dry signal.. Use GSNAP to pitch the vocal a bit and then pan the signal to the left or right.. You can render the effected vocal track then do it again for the other side..

Hope this helps..

Bit laborious though...I use gsnap already. What I would like to do is gsnap the vocal track and as the next insert effect apply subtle pitch shifting, delaying, and panning to create lots of vocals from one in realtime.

Surely there must be something which does this?

If you want lots of vocals from one, Clone Ensemble should do it.

This has come up several times, including missions for a replacement for the Waves Doubler. First, I don't know if I'd say it's "essentially simple" or anything; it features 2 to 4 voices, LFO, EQ, Feedback - quite a lot of things you'd have to do to recreate it perfectly.

We had some difficulty finding a replacement, Discord was the closest I could find, and I didn't think it was quite as good (very cool effect, though!). Sure you can do it manually, but Waves does it in realtime with a light footprint. Still gets my vote for best doubler.

Right........but its so simple with doubler

Clone ensemble might do it (sounds pretty artificial though). I'll try discord. Otherwsie I'll just build a Reaktor ensemble to do it - never built my own Reaktor before, but it's about time.

Yeah, DuosX and ChoirX are good plugins, but not a good replacement. I find Doubler really holds up well in mono and sounds less phasey compared to other fare.

Ah! Here's the last great thread on the subject.

Comparitively, the waves series just has a better algorithm for affecting pitch without a granular/phasey effect to create the effect of another "voice" by slightly detuning the audio, and creating the impression of location/depth. I also bought Clone Ensemble, but I find it uses some form of and audio tracking algorithm, because at times the artificial voices break up even though the original may be intact (only really on a low voice amount, such as 2 voices). Clone ensemble IS amazing for many other things though... namely thickass bass!! :hihi: I would recommend sidechaining a strong chorus effect to a stereo expander of sorts, such as wideboy vst or widerboy vst, and getting into some phase shifting and/or impulse response to create the impression of location.

Thanks Yoss. From the seldom-read clone ensemble user notes:
For ADT, you can achieve good results with a single Clone, Vibrato random, Depth quite low, Rate at its slowest, Section D, and the mix halfway.
Setting the number of clones to two also works well.
Nick Magnus (who spent years touring with Steve Hackett, ex-Genesis) pushed me to develop the random vibrato and single-clone features that let it do ADT.
