Applying FX to Clips - how do you do it?

I'm wondering, which host offers the ability, to apply channel FX on a clip basis?
Say you have a 4 bar MIDI-clip with a complete FX-chain and you want this clip become an audio file, you can copy/move like the MIDI clip itself.

How is this done in your host?

In Reaper i
1. open with the right mouse button the clip menu and choose "apply fx" and a new take as audio file is added to the clip.
2. The FXs have to be removed manually, but gladly the FX-chains can be stored as presets for an easy recall.

How do you fullfill this task in your host?

In SONAR 5 and 6, every clip can have an FX Bin that is part of the clip itself and it's moved/copied with the clip.
You can do "Bounce to clip" to have an audio file out of the clip with its FX applied.

In Tracktion, you can drag an FX onto a clip so that clip is effected by that in addition to the FX for the track. I'm not sure if you can apply multiple FX to a single clip this way (never tried it). You'd then have to render the clip to create the audio file you're seeking.

Mabian, that sounds interesting. Can you explain to me, what this FXbin is?

Post

It's a rack of effects; you can have an FX Bin for an audio track, for an audio bus or for a clip. The SONAR routing architecture is very smart and powerful.

I don't get it. Can you please explain to me, what you exactly have to do in Sonar, to get the channel-FXs calculated into a clip?

Post

Ah ok, now I get it; you want Channel FX applied to a clip.
So I don't remember well, but you should:
select the clip, solo the track on which it is located, and do "Export audio" with "What you hear" preset, choosing proper sample rate and bit depth. Then you have to reimport the audio saved by Export audio. A matter of a bunch of seconds.

In sonar, you right click a clip go to its properties and you have a separate fx bin for each separate clip in a track. pretty handy.

Post

mabian, that doesn't sound convincing to me. Imagine the track runs over a group-bus. That means lot's of even more clicks and still no good solution what happens to the original clip.

But you mentioned, Sonar has clip-FX. Isn't it possible to save track-FX chains and load them as clip-FX? Then i could apply them to the clip, with all advantages, i.e. that the original MIDI-clip stays connected with the rendered audio, couldn't i?

Post

You can exclude busses FX when exporting audio.
Anyway, about your request, you can copy or move FX between a track FX Bin and a clip FX, one at the time but no need to save and reload. This should end the question... or not?

Post

The render thing doesn't convince me, since i lose the connection to the original clip, which would mean a lot of additional organizing, which i want to avoid like in Reaper.
Dragging single plugins over is no solution for me, cause my finished chains can be quite long. BTW: how many insert-FX does Sonar allow?
Can a track FX-chain preset be loaded on a clip as clip-FX-chain?

Post

AFAIK there's no limit to the FX Bin size (how many plugins); the UI handles scrolling, so you're not limited that way.
Also, I do not know of any method to transfer a whole FX-chain from one FX bin to another, especially between track and clip bins. If you were to copy FX Bins between audio tracks, you could use track templates, but I think it doesn't work for this particular context.

In Logic: make a new track that has that channel strip, place an alias to your clip on it. If you want to experiment with different FX, mute and unmute different tracks.

At least, that's how I'd do it.

You can do the same with SONAR, using linked clips that are the same as alias in Logic. Do not know if that's what you're looking for.
