Saw this on the Sound on Sound web site. SSL (Solid State Logic), makers of those monster studio mixers, is paying the developer of the Linux DAW, Ardour to work full time on Ardour development.

Great to see substantial DAW development backing on Linux.
I suppose this will have implications on future digital mixer real-time OS choices.

I read that press release and see the same old stuff that all development startups and big-money backers say when there's a match. Which isn't a bad thing per se, it's just that I don't think one can accurately predict anything at all about Ardour or SSL's continuing tiptoeing into software at this stage of the game.

I did see an article in Computer Music that mentioned that SSL is looking to expand. I don't know the extent of that. It would be nice to see Ardour get some real money and {more} development time. ...Especially given that it's open source. I'm not sure why they went that way rather than with Muse or Rosegarden or some more appropriate package...

I know I have seen in a couple places that SSL is already producing smaller systems that would be similar to a budget studio digital console, like a Control 24 or something like it. I believe Neve was also talking about it

First, i don't believe what managers say. They are liars by profession.
And if a company pays an independent developer, then they expect something.
1. The developer is no longer independent. After a few months, when he quit the other job, then they maybe will give him some 'suggestions', where he should concentrate at.
2. SSL is obviously interested to expand. The deal with Waves and the Duende DSP-gear are showing this.

Well, several OSS devs are working for big companies, so it needn't be a problem.
Hopefully, this will mean a steady developement for Ardour. That would be very nice. I wonder if it would be possible to implement stuff like .bwf or .omf.

Since Peter Gabriel and the gang took over SSL, they've really done some interesting things with the company. I imagine this will have implications with that workstation company buyout they did earlier this year.
