The Jupiter 8 sound is powerful-almost two powerful. I've always liked how it cuts through a mix but sometimes it slices and dices so much that it ends up not being a good synth to layer because it becomes so powerful in the mix-especially when playing chords. I had an xpander once, I wished it cut through the mix like the Jupiter, yet it layered very nicely. You could add tracks and chords and it wouldn't become to muddy.

Is there a vst effect that would take the tone of the jupiter and put it to the back seat a little bit more. no eq, just kind of make it more transparent.

or am i dreaming.

Try turning the volume down ...

The way I'd try to accomplish this would be with volume and EQ. I don't know of any other way you could go about doing this.

mebbe you could send it to me and I could experiment with "toning it down" :hihi:

If you don't use the hi-pass filter to trim some bottom out of the Jup 8 sound it is going to get real messy, real fast in a layering situation. If you have an early Rev version it will be even harder...the early Revs often had pretty wild pitch stability, which you usually got away with in a normal band setting, but could really cock up studio sessions. The engineers would go,"Uh...can you tone down the pitch modulation a bit, there mate?" I would usually go, "Uh...sure, no problem.", then just move over to the D-50.

To layer the Jupiter 8 I would normally use the hi-pass filter to make it smaller, low passed the sound more than what I would have normally preferred, usually slowed the envelopes up a bit, *always* played simpler chord voicings, avoided playing too many parallel harmonies with the Jup 8 layer, and in general, stayed off the deep end.

In the end the Jup 8 was never a layering fav for me...always at its best when given a big open hole in the mix for its very own self. The ultimate rock synth, really...just open everything up and giver. :D

Sweet kilroy,

you know what i'm talking about...people get all bent out of shape-"don't say anything bad about the greats(JP8)" but it is true-it is an amazing synth yet hard to layer w/o thing getting really big and huge. it just takes over...what a synth.
i'm experimenting with the eq and although i've tried the hi-pass sometimes i don't like the sound because it takes out some of the warmth.

i'll let you know what i come up with.

I don't own a Jupiter 8 but find this thread interesting. I have noticed the trend of thick and phat makes for interesting and powerful preset demos but in the context the sounds often have to be thinned to be usuable in a mix. Sometimes, thin is in so to speak.
