limiting, expanding EQs

I'm wondering if there is any EQ plug in that has an absolute cut off for the various frequencies.
Most seem to reduce the volume so to speak by 12db, 24db and sometimes 36db.
I want it to reduce the "volume" of any selected fequency range to nothing.
Is that possible, or is it just not doable due to sound theory of some sort.

john morales, are you sure you don't confuse the labels?
just trying to avoid misunderstandings.
an eq mostly cannot do this (exept they have a lo or a hicutsection), you're right.
but, to avoid confusion:
if you speak of filters (not eq's),
12db, 24 db and 36 db are the octaves of filters (the slope), in which's frequency range the filter actually kills the frequency (infinite, but following the slope, hence the label "db/octave"). allthough there are eq's that of course use these db scales to reduce the frequencies, this should not be confused ...
however, if you i.e. use a notch, a lowpass or a highpass, they actually do what you describe.
i think what you mean is the centerfrequency, at which the slope should be oo db per octave.
the problem with infinite db/octave is, that, the more edgy (towards infinite db/octave) the cutoff gets, the more the filter sounds audible by ear as resonance.
you simply hear the edges of the cuttoff frequency then.
to answer your question, if i got it correctly:
elemental audio firium _can_ do that, but that sounds horrible, just because of the explained above.

I think you're referring to the slopes. a 12dB/Octave slope means that , past the cutoff point, the frequencies will be reduced at a rate of 12dB every octave (2 octaves -24dB, .5 octaves 6dB, etc.)johnmorales wrote:I'm wondering if there is any EQ plug in that has an absolute cut off for the various frequencies.

A steep slope like 36dB/Octave will do what you're after; an immediate slope wouldn't sound very good.
