DX21 VST, anything other than Foorius reccomended.

I'm looking for a proper (preferably free or cheap) VST version of the Yamaha DX21/27/100, which either already has the original sounds or which can import DX21 SYSEX. It should preferably be a faithful recreation, not something loosely based on the real thing.
The only one I've found so far is Foorius. Does anyone have other suggestions?

Thanks Goseba! I've tried the demo of Phantom and it looks great. It does have the (slight) disadvantage that it can't import TX81z sysex (which foorius can) but that is not that big a deal.
There is something ackward though, Imported DX21 (factory) banks sound quite different in Foorius than they do in Phantom. Since I don't own a real DX21 I don't really know how they are originally suppose to sound. Can anyone confirm that either Foorius or Phantom plays them correctly?

There's something I hate about Foorius. But I always forget what. Does it have some crazy non-standard GUI or something?

It has a pretty naggy nagscreen if i remember correctly.mistertoast wrote:There's something I hate about Foorius. But I always forget what. Does it have some crazy non-standard GUI or something?
I don't have it anymore for some reason.

If I recall, it didn't use the host preset system. That always pisses me off.
Or maybe I'm thinking of another synth. I've tried so many that I have difficulty remembering the ones I didn't keep.

Foorius does use the host preset system. Its interface is surely less appealing than e.g. the earlier recommended Phantom.
I'll probably buy the full version of Foorius but I really need to know if Foorius actually faithfully reproduces imported DX21 banks. The difference with Phantom is so big that I really can't understand what on earth is going on here.

Just did a bit of testing with the demo of Big Tick Rhino and imported DX21 banks sound different again... 3 synths, 3 different results, hmm, recreating classic 4OP FM synths sounds faithfully seems harder than I had imagined

this is a great little clone of a dx:

nothing fancy, but to me (and i own a dx100 and a tx81z) thisone sounds closest to tx81z and dx100 and such ... afaik it can import dx/tx syx patches ...
you should try it ...

I think that the sysex import is usually just a way to get a few sounds into the synth.
I'm not sure about the other hardware synths, but the DX7 has a very unusual way of doing envelopes. You can emulate the FM algorithms without emulating all the other stuff you need to make a synth sound the same as another.

Well, quite a few synths now offer a reasonable to near perfect emulation of the DX7. One would expect that achieving the same thing for (arguably) simpler synths would be relatively easy.
I just tried the demo of FM8 but surprisingly enough that only imports DX7/DX200 patches.

the site is up:vaen wrote:Thanks. Their website seems to be down so I can't download a demo. The entry on KVR does mention that it can import DX7 and TX81z patches (no mention of DX21/27/100)

dx 100 and tx81z are the same formats and the same sound synthesis structure, should work ...
