A pitch for Free Sample Effects Website

I just wanted to publicize what a great resource this website is for getting free sound effects to incorporate into your music:
http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/index.php
I am not affilaited with the website, but a member here referred me to it when I was looking for some specific sound effect samples to incorporate into my music. I expect this resource to add a nice "spice" to my music going forward.
Even though I am not affiliated with the site, if you are into sampling or sound design, please consider contributing. To me, the most helpful are the realistic sound effects, but that is just me.

Hmmm, I don't know much about the ideology behind it. I think I understand where you are coming from.Lagrange wrote:I dunno why I feel this way but.. I feel that the freesound projects devalue music.. Thats just me..

In my case, it just helps enhance the music I am creating. I think this site does not want "music" per se, but, rather, sound effects that can be used in music or other projects.

I'm torn about freesound.
On one hand, the open exchange of samples is beautiful.
On the other hand, If one relies on those samples for projects, it makes it much more difficult to make something unique *sounding*.
But as a tool in a diverse sample library, I don't see the harm.

i never thought about freesound having music loops. i'm not a fan of loops. if someone wants to use a super dooper acid looper, i think it's fine. music loops give ppl with limited ability a chance to feel like musicians. it's a beautiful thing
freesound is great for finding effects to use "as is" or mangle. it's also good for single shots to loop and map.

Bah, that's a stupid attitude - one I held for quite a while. But I realized that using loops is conducive to a certain workflow and tends to characterize the music. The time you save on composition minutae you end up putting into other details. I sometimes find myself rendering my own work to loops and working that way.androidlove wrote:music loops give ppl with limited ability a chance to feel like musicians. it's a beautiful thing

Yeah I'm not for using other people's stuff to much but I think using loops is alright as long as its not just ripping'm from a CD and throwing them on a track.well, yea, i'll recycle and alter my midi in a tune. i'm referring to those who use other ppl's music
I think that Freesound is great for stimulating creativity, I did a song where I hit the Random Sample link 10 times and made an entire song using only those samples (and plenty of effect :wink) and its one of my pieces that I really like. But again I don't think its a good thing to rely to much on samples most of the time.
And I think anything that gets people interested in making music is good.

For me the big benefit appears to be adding some samples (usually on the more realistic side) to add "spice" to a piece, whether it is a motorcycle revving up, birds chirping, footsteps, people shouting, etc..
I don't have the equipment or the inclination to record this type of stuff myself, so this a great resource for me.
Thanks to those people who contribute and maintain the site.
