IMHO...if you find Stormdrum's Taiko Presets to sound "poor" you will have problems finding something that satisfies you at all...

Hey men...last month I purchased StormDrum ,Now I think I wasted my money .
maybe the other instruments of it sounds good but :
It has only two Taiko drum patches, with the name (taiko Ambient) and (taiko earthquake) that the second one is exactly the same as the first one with a little EQ and compression on it also the worst thing is it has only 5 different samples In ambient taiko and it recorded with a sensible REVERB .
The samples are so weak in Low frequency harmonics,I try to put some Eq and Filtering on it but the problem is the Decay and Release of a real taiko drum is so longer than what we have here anyway I cant do anything with them .
I read in some post that RA Instruments Has a great set of taiko ,and I will test it in future if anyone has another Soundbank Im so glad to hear about that .

Why not sample your own? - assuming you have a sampler.Try one of Kodo's CDs, say Sai-so. Tons of musicians have sampled Kodo over the years.Sai-so's a good album, with remixes by Bill Laswell, DJ Krush, Kevin Yost and others.

Best Taiko drums i've heard sampled were from the Quantum Leap Rare Instruments package. I bought the giga version, and it's the best I've heard, very usable.

I watched an episode of "Lost" since I last read this thread, and found myself paying attention to the soundtrack's use of Taiko and other "deep" drums.
It really struck me that it takes a really careful combination of playing velocity and manipulated reverb depth to make digital Taikos sound 'real' - I know this is obvious, but my point is that you won't find a single "good sample" that evokes that style/sound, you really need to learn how to play and place the samples.
I think a lot of people who are looking for taikos want to hear the full velocity, bass and reverb as soon as they trigger the example patch in the above collections.
It's not a sound I've been after myself, but I think I would pitch down several different drums and really work on programming the velocity-versus-frequency relationship, while sometimes auditioning with a variable reverb.

for instance all the 'drums' in this piece are nothing but tapping on a prescription bottle and the sound of grain being tossed into a plastic tub...
makes prettybig drums, me thinks...

Rare instruments has a shitload of taikos, most sound similar, but are noticably different in the depth/size.
Get a good reverb plug like Reverence, which has a 'thunder drum' option. It makes them sound ok. Couple it with some reverb/delay from kontakt 2 (which I use for EWQL RI) and you get pretty big ambient taikos.

Thats true, but not all the times ,I always put a lot of time on mastering technics, specially on my drums and bassline . But I think all of u agree with me ,that u cant put some effect and EQ on a (8 bit 22 khz) sample to make it ready for the song ,The source is so important and with a wise mastering technics it become better and better .but my point is that you won't find a single "good sample" that evokes that style/sound, you really need to learn how to play and place the samples.
I aslo listened to some demo from ProjectSam True Strike 2 and I think it has somethings to say . but I think I cant find the package right now .
