I'm going to create my own stadium IR, who knows how to do it?

Any tips? Any hints? I've googled, but someone here may point me in a direction I hadn't thought.

Does Voxengo Deconvulver work well?

I've got the mic's, I've go the recorders. Now all I need is the permission, access, khow. (the know how is the hardest part)

thanks

There used to be a good tutorial on www.soundvault.com, but even the WebArchive WayBackMachine can't get to that content anymore.

Here is another tutorial: http://emusician.com/tutorials/emusic_acting_impulse/
I skimmed through it, seems a good one for starters...

For such a big space a starter gun may be not loud enough - use a BIG firecracker.

starting pistol or a PA system....

Right: it was at the NoiseVault dot com, not SoundVault...

Well I want to sample the PA system, to sound like an announcer at a sports stadium.

Well, you set up your recording gear, play an impulse through the PA, and Bob's yer Uncle!!

I know all that, but I don't know what is the best impulse, I don't know how to get it prepared for Verb's and such. The books mentioned here will help.

Thanks everyone!

The best impulse is a white noise bang/crack, but in your situation it would be extremely hard to create a white noise bang loud enough for a stadium with a full range speaker so you will have to use some kind of an explosive (a starter gun or a firecracker).

Try placing an additional mic close to the source and look at its frequency analysis then use a different pop/bang/crack and mix them all to create an impulse with equal power across all frequencies then apply the same equalization settings to the final response recorded on your main mic.

Just an idea (maybe a stupid one).

darn, theres a VST that is designed to create IRs. It was made in synthedit. Cant remember the name or the dev :(

the gun/firecracker option is fine for random results, and will need tons of adjustment.

since speakers are on location and dw wants to sample'em too, the sweep approach should give more detailed results.
..hoping that the pa system and speakers are in good shape. the sweep touches such extreme frequencies, and bad speakers might react bad, rattling, etc. (a special sweep can be made to avoid this, though)

but then again, being the stadium a higly diffused and complex(and big) shaped space the IR will result in an undefined "splash", no matter how "not perfectly enough" you might capture it.
just thinking and wasting time to end my cigarette...

I'm going to go for the sweep, I just have to find a stadium, probably indoor. I then have to convince whomever is in charge of sound to let me do it.

I definetly want the sound of an announcer coming through the PA system.

I have a feeling there has got to be some people who would let me.

I think that for capturing a natural reverb of the stadium the sound source must come from only one spot so he would need to move all the speakers to the grass.

But if you just want to capture that characteristic sound of sports announcer coming from many speakers at the same time then use the sweep method William.
