Please could someone tell me what effects I need to apply to an ordinary flute sample to get the sort of sound you hear on songs by Focus. I think it's called Overblowing (?)
I'm using sampletank 2 in cubase sx. Thanks.

i dont know what kind of flute you're talking about exactly since i've never even heard of Focus, however when you mention overblowing i can say that a common flute sound people are looking for is sometimes better recreated by searching for more ethnic winds like the pan flute or the shak. maybe try layering that with a normal flute sound and when you want to have more of the overblowing sound turn up the volume on the ethnic wind and turn down the volume of the standard flute. just an idea.

When I hear "overblown" I almost always think of a shakuhachi, such as the one in the following mp3 example:

Is this the sound you are going for?

There is a flute effect that Jethro Tull used where the flautist hums the note while he/she plays it. Could that be what Jeff is looking for?
Native Amer. Flute are sometimes overblown as an effect, as are other ethnic flutes. But I don't remember transverse flutes (silver) doing that. Than again, I could have just missed it.

If you have a copy of the SAM (http://www.projectsam.com) flute FX freebie (or the whole package) there are some very nice overblown and other sounds included. There's also some sounds in the gtown archive that should be available via legaltorrents (http://www.legaltorrents.com).
cheers,
dorian
PS. The other freebies offered by SAM are VERY nice - lots of concert percussion!
PPS. EDIT - Didn't realize that this was only for Sampletank related instruments. Though you COULD roll your own if you have XL and can import and map your own samples.......most of the above are one-shots or single layer samples.
