how would you connect a mxr guitar flanger to a PC?

since im using all software vsts and effects,

i would like to use this particular flanger as it will give the "jan hammer" effect,

how would i go about connecting this to my PC?

the flanger has in and out sockets and was made in the 1970's.

any info is appreciated

An output of your soundcard goes to the input of the flanger, the output of the flanger goes back to the input of your soundcard. I guess you can figure out the setup in your host yourself.

I'd advice to keep the output of the soundcard 20dB softer than you'd normally do, and put an extra 20dB gain on the input of the soundcard. That way the sound level is approximately the same as a normal electric guitar would be. But chances are the unit can handle normal line levels pretty well (but don't push it too hard!)

I know each h/w flanger is quite unique, but isn't there a software unit that comes close?

If its a rack effect no worries, but a pedal you have computer line out to pedal input missmatch....that is a impedence missmatch and maybe not worth it.

I assume you're talking a stompbox footpedal, designed for guitar level input. You need an impedance matching device, like a reamp box, to match the input and output impedance properly.

I've used guitar stomp boxes with line signals before. And it works also without impedance matching devices inbetween. I did it without a: because I didn't know any better, b: because I didn't have that kind of gear at hand, and c: I got the results I wanted!

1970's mxr flanger

it has in and out sockets for regular guitar wires i think,

but my PC has small inputs and outputs sockets at the back of it, how do i arrange this connection from the flanger to my PC?

I wish to use the FM7 vst and have the hardware mxr flanger as a plugin effect going back into my PC,

ive never tried this before, will there be lots of latency?
As I will first be playing the sound from the vst, then the sound goes to the mxr flanger and then back into the pc?

Is this viable? Or not worth doing?

Likewise, I've used a few stomp boxes in the past and never had any problems matching impedance etc. They all worked at line level fine and dandy. I still have a Boss bass overdrive pedal (quite a nice sound apart from the Eq, of course) and that too just plugs straight into any line level source. I've never used any with guitars...I bought them all specifically to use with synths.

aah, thats excellent,

also, say i want to connect the flanger, then also connect a rockman distorter to my PC at the same time,
can i do both of them at the same time, i'm not sure i would have enough line in sockets at the back of my PC,

what do you reckon? Is there some sort of router thing that can be bought and then all external hardware plugged into that?

I'm new to this hardware stuff, I'm specifically going to use a Rockman distorter and a mxr flanger, as these are the actual hardware used by J Hammer for distorting his synths, and I really need the same effects!

I have nothing sensible to add except that I'm now very jealous. That little box is a fantastic pedal (and built like a tank).
You should try it on vocals, too.
