Disk streaming from USB drive

Due to my current PC configuration, I can't add another internal drive. I do have a 250gb ATA drive however that I could hook up to a USB-connected external enclosure. If I were to do this, could I realistically use disk streaming and expect any kind of good performance? How bad is the speed hit as opposed to direct ATA/IDE connection?

High speed USB has a bandwidth of 60MB/s. It has always been fast enough for me, but then I don't use terabyte sized sample libraries either.

So, at that rate, small samples (eg. <1mb) drums being previewed from FL's browser might not be an issue, but loading 4gb worth of QLSO samples might be?

I think it is dependent on how the sampler is set up. I have loaded GPO from a USB drive and it worked like a charm. But GPO doesn't really use 'pure' disc streaming, it loads the samples into RAM. I don't know alll that much about other samplers/sample sets, so I am going to shut up now and let a real sample-tech-nerd explain in detail.zircon wrote:So, at that rate, small samples (eg. <1mb) drums being previewed from FL's browser might not be an issue, but loading 4gb worth of QLSO samples might be?
