I just started playing guitar and a friend of mine told me I could use BIAB to help practice, basically playing along with a song. I have not had any formal music training and am very new to learning guitar.
I would like to take an MP3 (Rockin Me - Steve Miller Band), import it into BIAB, remove the guitar portion of the song and play it back so I can attempt to play along with the music.
Is this possibe? Any willing to help a newbie get his music career off to a good start? :)
Any insight greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kerry

There is a feature in BIAB 2007 which will try to detect chords from an audio file. I never tried it so I can't tell you if it works or not. It won't be possible to remove a guitar portion from it. You'd be better off generating a rock song from scratch depending on what style you want and get it to generate a chord structure for you using the melodist feature. The video tutorials on BIAB website (www.pgmusic.com) are very helpful.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Could you tell me how to create a rock song from scratch? I watched the video tutorials, however I am not a musician and was unable to follow the video or translate into something I could understand.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Kerry

When you open BIAB, look toward the upper center of the interface and click on Melodist. Once on the Melodist screen, click on a style on the left pane, then click ok. This should generate a song for you. Once the song is generated look in the upper left hand corner to see the instruments and choose which onces you want to mute (turn the volume all the way down). It would greatly benefit you to learn some basic music theory (keys, scales, chords, etc) to maximize the use of this program. There are some resources on the net, and check out the Music Theory section of this site. There are more than willing to help.

Band in a Box does a pretty good job of detecting chords for a rock song. However, it won't remove the guitar track. Instead, tt will load the MP3 into the Recorded Audio track. You can then mute or delete the recorded audio. I used the Audio Chord Wizard on Sting's "Children's Crusade" off "Dream of the Blue Turtles" with good results.

silenthill2006 is right; the videos are very helpful and free to everyone.

@kerrycorcoran: Download the demo from http://nn.pgmusic.com/demos/demo_bbw.php

Silent, Chris,
Thanks for the assitance thus far.
I was able to generate a song and remove various elements of the tune.

Chris, the demo version is for version 2006 which doesn't have the Audio Chord Wizard.

I guess I was under the impression this would be a lot more intuitive. I am planning on taking formal lessons, just attempting to get a head start.

I have an entire Sunday to kill (rare occassion for me) and really wanted to be able to practice along with the song.

Any assistance you can offer greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kerry
