Very quick question:
I'm making a unison synth in a combinator, lets say 3 oscilators, one fine-tuned to -20 and panned hard left, one panned in the middle, and the other fine-tuned +20 and panned hard right.
Now I've already got some sort of unison, but what seals the deal is when I use my UNISON effects device (I use reason) to grab some wet "unisoned" signal and mix it back into the mix. The unison is sent as a send effect a not a direct insert.
Now this is my dilema, its easier to control the patch if I put the unison effect as a send effect on the main mixer, end then turn the send fx knob of the one channel in which all 3 oss come in all mixed together. But I could also attach the Unison send effect to the mixer that merges these 3 oss, and equaly turn the fx send knob on all 3 mixer channels, so that the 3 oss merge, the sound is already mixed in with some unison fx.
I try making some test, and to the ear it almost sound like it come up with the EXACT EXACT EXACT same result, except for the amplitude, one of them is sligntly louder, but its adjustable, that's a problem...
What do you think? does it makes a difference? if it does, which one should give the best result, proffessionnaly speaking since to someone not paying much attention, they are the same thing....
And just to be clear, I'll put this in math language in case some of you didn't get what I meant.
if you think of the 3 oscilators I described eirlier as 3 channels which have different pan and finetune settings, is it better to:
1.
-take 50% of oss 1's signal, 50% of oss 2's signal and 50% of oss 3's signal, send that to a unison fx device which returns the wet output into a new channel, and then merge all 5 of these channels together.
2.
-merge the 3 oscillators together into one channel, send 50% of that channel's signal to a unison fx device which will return the wet output into a new channel, and then merge the 2 channels together.
or
3.
-it makes no difference, both will sound the same...
BTW: if you can help me, I'm also curious to know if the answer would be the same no matter what kind of fx you would use instead of a unison, and also if the answer would be the same lets say you used a filter (same filter on each oscilator vs one filter on the merged signal)...
