In that range probably I would say your best bet is with something from dbx maybe the 160A, 166, or 266. I've had good experiences with their products they're nothing special but they are well made and do the job.
I think they are discontinued but if you can find a used dbx 165 those sound pretty good. And if you are looking at used gear you might see if you can find an Empirical Labs Distressor. Brand new they are ~$1300 but they are pretty sweet.
Good luck, I'm always glad to see people are still interested in hardware.

The JoeMeek stuff is worth a look at too. A bit quirky, and not necessarily the most flexible, but definitely with character.
TBH, there isn't a "best" at that price range, as there are quite
a few that have real character, and that character depends on personal taste.
Another suggestion might be to look at some channel strips etc. There are a few at that price, and some have quite decent compressors, but you also get the advantage of some real Eq etc, so you have alot more flexibility. Focusrite isn't too bad a place to start. Some of their prices are pretty cheap for what you get.
I was amazed at how much JoeMeek have dropped over the years too.
Here's what looks like a good'un:

It's a dual Comp/Eq...loks like full Eq too. And I see it's got analogue/digital outputs of all types that you'll most likely use, too. And you get change of $140 to buy another toy with...

SInce I have and am extremely happy with my Vintage DBX 165, I'll say that, They usually sell for around $600-$800 on Ebay. And it really is a special unit. SMOOTh is the word of the day for that compressor. For vocals, I couldnt imagine a better one.. For Bass guitar, acoustic guitar, snare,, whatver I have always been very happy with the results..
Another one which I havent seen around in awhile is an ADL1500 tube compressor. Actually it may be the ADL1000?? The mono version. The stereo version is about $1600. but the mono goes for about $1000, and i used one in a studio and it also was phenomanal..

For the money the RNC is tough to beat, however it's a stereo compressor. While you can use just one i/o, you cannot use it as two separate compressors.
IMHO the Distressor is the shit. It can sound like pretty much any compressor on the market, 1176, LA2, 160, etc, and has some great unique to the EL8 sounds. They can often be found on Craigslist or e-bay for a around a grand, and are worth every penny.

The Drawmer 241 suits just about any application I have ever used it for. Very versatile with good response controls but not much colouration or character if that's what you're looking for.
