Question About Purchasing New Internal Hard Drive

I am thinking about getting a new internal drive to replace my 300 gb ATA drive I currently have.
I can pick up a 5oo gb PATA drive pretty inexpensively. Basically, I am hoping this will allow my to hold off getting a new computer for about 3 years, at which time I hope that the new computers will obviate the need for networking multiple computers for big sample libaries (the 4 GB limit should be eliminated, 64 bit processing should be widespread, and multi-core processors should increase available CPU).
Any reason to believe I will have any problem replacing by ATA drive with a PATA drive?
I use Sonar (currently 3.1.1).
Thanks.

i think you must mean SATA (not PATA which would really be regular/older ATA).
if this is what you mean then you would need a SATA connector or card. Your motherboard may already have one, but you haven't said what motherboard you have.

Why not add another 250+ GB drive? Even EIDE will do fine. Chances are your mobo has a secondary HD controller which isn't in use yet. And two HD's is always better than one: spread the workload...
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

I am pretty sure I do no have a slot for it. I have a DVD/CD drive, a CD burner and two hard drives. I think that uses up all my IDE (is that the correct term?) slots. I like to have to have a cd and separate cd burner slot to copy my CDs to send out.BertKoor wrote:Why not add another 250+ GB drive? Even EIDE will do fine. I only have USB 1 and no Firewire at present time.
Does this make sense.
Like you said, it looks like P-ATA might be the same as ATA, to distinguish it from SATA. I do not think I have SATA connectors/card in my Dell. But I will check. On the other hand, I have heard some people having problems with SATA drives. Is that still the case?
Any more comments are welcome. The 500 gb I saw was $139.00.
If someone sees a very good deal (in the US) for a large drive that should work well (seek time seems to be very important), let me know. But, I don't have to rush out this minute.

I might upgrade over the summer. But, I have to say, even though its a little dated, I probably underuse its feature set.PinothyJ wrote:WOW!

i've heard unconfirmed rumors that sata and daw's don't mix well together, but i can't provide any hard info to back that up. you might ask around, or do some googling to see what comes up.
only things to keep in mind with sata is:
your motherboard needs to support SATA (meaning it has the connector for it)
your powersupply either needs to have SATA support, or you'll need an adapter
when i was drive shopping, my problem was that my motherboard supported it, but my power supply didn't, and the drives you buy in the store seldom (if ever) had the cables you would need, which made the decision for me more difficult and potentially costly.
i opted to stick with plain old IDE.

It seems like most 500 gb drives are SATA. Is there any downside (aside from perhaps paying mroe than I should) if I get SATA drive intead of an "plain old IDE/ATA drive?
