recording of a Train Outside My Window

I used the H4 to record this train on a windy, blustery day (today) and to my surprise a train came by

I recorded it at 48/24, I then used audio move to convert to 44.1/24. At it's peak the train did clip on the H4 a few times, but Oh well. I'm learning.

I edited it cubase, but damnit, I forgot to dither..F$#k, when I exported to 16 bit.

I notice this mp3 is not as crisp and the dynamics don't seem as good, but it's a nice recording of a train going by.

Would you (or could you point me to someone else that could..) be prepared to make some field recordings for me? I don't have the equipment (or money to buy it) to do it at all...

I'm looking for:

* City main street ambience
* Longish recording of birds tweeting (think Pink FLoyd: Cirrus Minor)
* Street ambience outside a nightclub
* school playground ambience/kids playing

...and some other stuff, but I wont be too greedy atm

I'd appreciate a reply either way, here, or PM.

There just isnt enough quality free stuff out there. 10 second loops arent really very convincing to me. I realise time is precious, but you would be fully credit on anything that any of my compositions were released free to the web that used it/them, if you could manage it.

In fact, over the coming months I am building a website *exactly* for this need - it will take quite some time to get a big library of field recordings, but the idea is to create a large database of recordings with many people over the world contributing - the core content will be royalty-free, and *free* (but maybe will require registration to keep the downloads manageable). Then, I would like to offer specialised, themed CD downloads that are payware, but that is further into the distance and depends just as much on the contributors I get on board.

It might even be that people will be able to come to the site, and say "hey, I need this" and we can try to get it done.

i was just thinking of this. it's hard and confusing to find royalty-free, free loops on the net without worrying about all the copyright shit these days. i'm planning to get an h4 soon, too, so i could contribute. and i'm in japan so might be able to get some different sounding stuff!

Hi, just tried an experiment. Did a field recording while riding the metro. 16 bit stereo wav. Put a ATR 35 mic on each side of my hand truck, facing away from each other for separation, and recorded to 16-bit wav. I'd appreciate suggestions or critique. I waited on the platform for about 10m, listened to a couple of trains go by at different distances from me, and then I rode the train for ~ 20 m and listened to people around me talk trash. A lot of conductor announcements and automated messages from the train. I split the recording into 7 min segments, and each segment starts w 9 seconds of the previous one, if you want to paste them together again.

If you enjoy this one I can do others. Criticism is welcome too. I tried compressing the audio and tweaking the eq, but decided I should let you do that at your end if you play with it. So the recording is in its original form, although I am ATM enjoying this recording more running it through a Symetrix 525 compressor.
