Time to chat about formats here.
We've seen since the last competition the arrival of Universal Binaries for IntelMac's. More developers are handing out version of their plugins in UB format.
Reaktor is a format that I think we should support since it can be run on both Windows and Mac. Ofcourse you need the Reakrot runtime to run it. But it would definitly be a good format to support since every user with Reaktor can test it out.
What about Protools RTAS format?
What do you think about these format?

Hello Devs,
I think jobromedia has brought up a very important topic. My wish is that the software be cross-platform and that any Mac software be in UB format. As a user, not a developer of software, I understand that may be much easier said than done. I am amazed at how much 'pro-quality' freeware and low-cost shareware that is offered to the music community. I can only imagine the time and skill that is involved in creating a software application or plug-in, not to mention making a version for both PC and Mac (including UB).
But it's the developer that can provide their software for both platforms and their respective native formats that I think should win a competition and the respect it brings. This is in no way meant to say that a PC-only or Mac-only developer deserves any less respect. As for a theme, if I was a programmer, I would feel confined. I like the idea of an open-ended competition and feel it could spawn some pretty wild bits of kit. On the other hand, if a certain type of theme is enforced, it would be more difficult and hence, more of a challenge for someone's software to truly stand-out from the rest.
There are plenty of great plug-ins out there already, but I'm sure people are up to the challenge to code something not yet seen before. I see this as a difficult task, one that should make for a great "Developer's Challenge"!!
Just my 2 cents...Peace- morphex

Just my two cents here:
Converting a SynthEdit synth into reaktor wouldn't be too hard. Ok you had to recreate the phase distortion osc but then again you have samples support. Can't tell how hard it is to convert to protools tho.
I'd say that if you can convert a synth to Reaktor then it is a good idea to do it since this is the next best thing to the UB format since both Mac AND PC can open them with Reaktor.

Sonicbirth seems to be a good thing, just downloaded it for the mac, says it can render AUs and VSTs, it's shareware and open source
Can someone say "Synthedit for Mac"

This may seem like a weird comparison, but I think enforcing a theme on the dev competition would yeild a scenario that most would argue is the same reason something like NASCAR is dull and boring: Everything is over homogenized and made to be way too identical. Sure, it may be a bit harder to compare entries with everything so varied, but it allows everyone to show off their expertise in a particular area, instead of forcing potential entrants into one design.
Maybe, now, you could have a different competition, like a plugin-of-the-month comp where say for this one, everyone make a delay-based effect, then this next one everyone design an FM synth, then next time after that build up a sampler/rompler or something to that effect.
But I for one strongly push that KVR DC stay open format and not restrict the Devs. After all, we are giving the plugs away, the least we could be given is the freedom to choose what we make.

As freebies, the DC stuff need to be available for everyone. Reaktor clearly doesn't fit and I don't think pro-tools users are the main target here. We only need VST for windows and UB and/or AU for mac users. Some companies already struggle to release their plugins in multiformat, the DC developers usually have even less time for these issues.

----There's no need for any format rules at all. If a plug-in is cross-platform, and good, then it will win, if it's mediocre, it won't win anyways. It won't change the outcome of the challenge one bit. The only thing it would do, is alienate about 1/2 the devs, and by my estimate, that much or more of the users/voters. Just knowing someone made one lame pointless rule that caused half the devs to drop out, would sour me on the whole thing personally. Keep it 100% open, or why bother at all.

----Cool, I'm glad tuz saw this one and stepped in before it kept on. And sorry if I sounded a bit overbearing in my post, but I just can't imagine the Dev Challenge having a bunch of rules & requirements that would start excluding people, that's just not what it's about.
