In arranging horns, especially big band, there's a very commonly used progression and harmony. It's almost a cadence and is usually use to accent a phrase or a lyric line. I don't have any concrete samples right now and I don't know if the description is concrete enough.

My question is, what is the basic theory behind this progression?

I think you have to be a litte more concrete.

Is it something like this you're looking for? (the sounds suck, I exported it directly from Print Music):

There tends to be a certain amount of slip-sliding in semi-tones in short brass riffs. You can do quick accents at the end of a line by sliding off a flat 3rd and 5th to a major 3rd and 5th.

Vibrato too, where applicable (particularly the trumpets in the high ranges).

My post here contains some info about writing for Horns, I don't know if that's what you meant?

I'll see if I can track down some samples this evening.

Sadly the sample that comes to mind is a Marilyn Manson track from Portrait of An American Family, but now I can't remember which one. But yes I will definately try to get a sample

@JumpingJackFlash: I'm going to try your progression tonight, it looks like it might be close.

@ Sonarman: I'll try this to, as it sound (in theory) like it's part of what I'm thinking of.
