OK, I have searched every corner of the web (including the ones listed in this forum) but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for, so here I am asking for help again...

I believe that only somebody who lives in Japan or an anime fan (like me) will know what I'm talking about, anyway: I badly need the sound of the typical Japanese dragonflies, the very loud insects you can hear in the background whenever there's a scene set in a field or something in an anime or film - long enough to be looped decently, if possible.
Can anybody help, please?

Japanese dragonflies in 'real life' make almost no sound. What you after after is a cicada, which does indeed make a hell of racket - cool rhythms - in its short life,. Sort of the sound of the Japanese summer.

Unfortunately, the Japanese variety I'm looking for is very peculiar and unique,you can tell it's it right away, hence my difficulty

And yes, could be a cicada (I'm really no expert, even if - living in the woods - I find lots of bugs and moths and stuff in my food...).
I'll give the files a try, anyway (slow connection, so it's gonna take me a while), I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, if anybody comes up with the sound of the precise species please let me know

Anyway, I'll try looking for japanese cicadas now (so far I looked for dragonflies) and see if I can come up with something...
I could take it from some scene in Neon Genesis Evangelion, but it'd be very complicated (computer and anything I have available to record in one room, TV and vcr in another...), so if anybody has any ideas they are welcome...

Cicadas' sounds can be highly localized. When my mate and I visited her sister near Washington, D.C., just a hundred miles north of where we live, the tone and rhythm of the cicadas was entirely different. Same species, I think, but a distinctly altered "song."

i live in japan. i know that sound well. i'd be happy to record that sound for you, but it'll be another few weeks or maybe a couple months before the cicadas are out in full swing.

maybe i can find something online in japanese. i'll look around.

If any of you has Evangelion and is an expert in insects (and is in this forum about electronic music, all of which would make you a pretty interesting person indeed...), the sound I'm looking for can be heard - for example - when the neighborhood where Rei lives is shown, if I remember correctly. From there you could tell the species, perhaps...

I know it's not exactly what you're looking for, but a cool little plug to have if you ever need that "lost in the woods" ambience. Sometimes in the winter I'll set it up with infinite sustain to help beat the winter blues.

I'm gonna download it and try it anyway (if you want to know what winter blues really are you should see me in winter...)
It's certainly involuntary, but I find it funny that the author writes in the introduction to let him know "if you encounter any bugs"

Oh my God, that's it!!!!

I don't know how common that sound really is in Japan, but in my mind that's exactly the sound of rural Japan!

The sound quality is a bit crappy, but with some filters and keeping it in the background I can finally get the freaking track under way

Yep, thats the sound of the Japanese summer after the rainy season finishes. Every year for 7 weeks. Amazing thing is that the larvae are stored underground for something like 14 years, then they emerge, climb up the trees, reproduce, vibrate like lunatics for 7 weeks and die. And a whole lot of them in trees can get really loud. They're called 'semi' in Japanese. That sound = very hot and humid - the height of summer.
