I've a 49 key midi controller and my aim is to map drum samples to each key in an ergonomic way to allow live play of fast-paced beats such as those found in IDM/breakbeat music.
Is there a decent, preferrably cheap/free (although that isn't a requirement) sampler out there that'll do the mapping but also be able to set individual properties for each key? For example, some keys will play whole samples when pressed and when released the rest of the sample will play, others will only play when depressed, some will loop, some keys won't, etc. Anyone know of a suitable sampler, be it a plugin or standalone?
Thanks in advance

Both Windows-specific:
EXSC + SampleLord would be one possibility (not too expensive).
sfz player (free) + mapping your own samples is another possibility.
Whatever you use, take a look at http://www.sonicreality.com/imap/ - this mapping layout is specifically designed for "drum from the keyboard" playing. Some ESoundz products come with I-Map'd drum sets (Studio Drums and Sonik Synth 2, for example). You might find it a good choice to use for your own mapping, as well.

yeah the imap sets are amazing for playing fast beats. i think though that something more along the lines of battery or kontakt is in store for executioner cause sampletank2 isn't really designed for this sort of drum-cell matrix programming with various choke options, more just intended for playing back libraries such as the ones that feature the i-map kits.
i am wondering though if IK is ever going to enter the drum/one-shot sampler market though cause i know they would do an excellant job of making something cool and easy-to-use with some warm amp fx.

battery 3 might be a good choice for you. you can use a midi keyboard as well as a qwerty keyboard as a trigger. loads multiple formats and has good syncing features as well as cell/master effects and sends.

Thanks for all the help, I found an old copy of the first version of Battery and from what I can tell it's more or less exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. I'm downloading the trial version of Battery 3 now, then I'll make the move to it.
The imap layouts look great, I'll probably use them as pretty strong guidelines in my own mapping.
Cheers!
