Been having a play with Reason and I must say, I do like the Dr Rex player!

Whats the closest thing to this in VST instrument?

thats the first thing i asked to myself when i first had a check on reason :)
the only alternative, but still way far from dr rex and definitely with more features (still, not all the times you need using a rex player with countless feature you may NOT need on that sample) are the usual i fear, so apart from the bib bwoys able to read rex files like Halion and similar the other smaller options could be AMG solo one and Microdicer by ConcreteFX,,the middle way and maybe the more stable for certain kind of mangling maybe izotope phatmatik, formerly bitshift audio...still, not exactly cheap

version 1.5 of liveslice will have .rx2 import

If you think of it, the fact that propellerheads makes Reason and the REX format, your probably not going to get a player that is as good.

IIRC NI Intakt does a really good job with REX files. Also not too sure but does LiveSlice read them yet?

FL Slicer can import RX2 files, but that's a FL plugin.

The best rx2 player is Stylus RMX. It absolutely slays Dr Rex and is so much more than just a rex player. Technically its not a rex player as you have to convert from rex to SAGE, but the converter is free and reliable.

Bonza, thanks for the suggestions lads!

I hadnt thought of Intakt, but Iv been eyeing that up for a while. Might have to give it a try.

I couldn't stand Intakt, myself. I found it really hard to slice and control beats with the NI interface; switching between creating, muting and deleting slices is really awkward, and the window just isn't big enough.

Personally, I think there has never been a satisfactory beatslicer VST. Which is amazing, when you consider the age and popularity of sliced loops!

I believe Intakt has been discontinued and nearly all its functionality is included in Kontakt.

Check out Stylus RMX

Hmmmm, well thats kind of screwed that then, lol.

Really, Im looking for something to play back my rex files more than act as a slicer. I used to just do this in the sequencer and lock the loop to grid, but Im beginning to find it very limiting, creatively.

What I love about Dr Rex is that you loads a rex file, and literally a few minutes later is sounds NOTHING like it did to begin with. The filters have a really characterist sound imo. And its so easy to use.

Thats pretty much the kind of functionality that Im looking for. Something quick, simple but creatively inspiring to work with. I dont care if it has bells and whistles on, such as extensive effects or loop slicing / editing features. Just throw in rex loops and mess about... thats the order of the day!

Do you have FL, tee boy? FL Slicer is, by far, my most used 'instrument'. It's a solid slicer with all of the benefits and flexibility of FL's piano roll

i totally agree..i dont want a uber-exaustive featured monster only to use slices, i need simple straight reader...a cut down phatmatik pro (NOT phatmatik free, that s different) would fit perfectly to me...
a crossover between dr rex and phatmatik almost :D
