"Produced" drum sample sets?

Hi Folks,

I'm working on a sampling project...can't give specifics like 'who it's for' and 'what sampler it's for', but I can tell you what it is. I'm looking for opinions. I've sampled my two drum kits pretty extensively (Tama and a pearl. hehe, now I can sell them :P ) for this project...the dev I'm working for and I are tossing around the idea of a "pre-produced" set. Now, this one would most likely be for hip-hop, D&B, breakbeat type stuff. With that in mind, is anyone making music in these genres, especially newbies/novices interested in a "pre-produced" drum sample set? Now, the set would be multisampled at various velocities, and would be available in 2 versions (I think), one with room ambience, and one without....by pre-produced I mean that it would be EQ'd, Compressed, etc, and given some old-school vinyl/hip-hop flavor via effects processing. Sort of a 'ready-for-mastering' set to slap into tracks...maybe as a time saver, maybe as an easy-option for novices to get nice drum tracks without much knowledge.

Sorry for my rambling, it's past my bed time :hihi: , but please post up and let me know your thoughts. (note: not to be a snot, but I really don't need much of the "Well I do all my own production from start to finish because I'm so pro, so this concept sucks ass" type of opinions... ;) ).

I'll post some mp3s later on maybe (not guaranteeing that though, not sure if I'm allowed to yet).

I would shell out hundreds of dollars in a second for a pre-produced breakbeat kit, but it would have to be REALLY good. I have yet to hear a single good sample CD that has not required massive processing for a killer breakbeat sound.

Thanx zircon. Could you post or point point me in the direction of some examples of what you would consider to be a "Killer" breakbit kit?

Absolutely.

Things to note: kicks that are POWERFUL, but tight. Not flabby. Not like a standard acoustic drumkit sound. Needs to have 'oomph' without just filling the sub range with a sine wave. This is absolutely crucial. Snare is deep, tight, but not too ringy. It's "low". Also check the hihat fills in between, they sound fantastic.

Again, low-sounding, phat snare with a tight, BIG kick.

Same as above two - kick isn't as impressive here, but the snare is amazing.

http://www.soundtempest.net/sample4.mp3 (tefnek - good morning)

Basically perfect kick/snare with awesome, tight open hihat.

More of a disco style, but the drums here could easily be used for breaks. Fantastic phatness on the kick/snare.

I could easily find more but I think this sums up generally what I am looking for in a drum library (and again, I have yet to hear one that comes close - eLab's stuff has been the best so far)

Something to do with the new Manytone release, perhaps?

Stylus got this covered already.

Nope, not manytone at all actually. :)

Anyone going to do one for rock? Or know if there are sets for rock available?

I know of www.stevenslatedrums.com but I am sure there is a market somewhere for rockers...

No, Stylus doesn't have this covered. I own Stylus and while it's fantastic for a whole range of purposes, it doesn't have this particular style of sound.

Yeah, Stylus in general is a bit "lighter" than the typical breakbeat sound. Eric will deny that Stylus has a "sound" but I think it does, despite an undeniably wide range of content.

That's not to say that you can't make these kinds of sounds using the included sample content and the synth engines and FX in Stylus, but it doesn't have a ton of instant breakbeat stuff contained within in an effort free form.

And that stuff is quite hard to create, at least for me. As it's Zirc's genre, he'll probably find it easier to create this stuff.

Well, good news for everyone....I let zircon here some previews of some test versions, and he loved them...with the exception of the kick not being strong enough for his taste...so it still needs work, but we're on the right track! Actually, the developer took notice of this thread and told me that he wants exactly what zircon is talking about, so you can count on them being up to "zircon standards" :hihi:

Haha, I'm seeming like a real drum elitist here... ;) What can I say though, I like the sound, I write a lot of EDM... the more time I can spend writing and sequencing, the better.

Hey, have you considered including a package of MIDI sequences as well to get people started? Might be useful. One of my favorite drum sample CDs is "Gota Yashiki's Groove Activator". It's a single CD with <50 loops done on a drum machine or sequencer of some kind. VERY cool grooves, TCM samples it a lot. It also has oneshots so you can rebuild them yourself. The combo of the oneshots and the grooves was great and makes it very usable, though it has a host of technical problems, and limited material... probably why it only cost $10 when I got it.
