It has now become very much a formality for me to consult with my fellow KVRians about future purchases. This time around im contemplating electric basses predominantly for studio use. My old roomate had a fender jazz that i would use whenever need be, but unfortunately i am now bassless and am looking for opinions/recommendations. Keep in mind that this will be used for dry recording, as I do not have a bass amp. Im basically just seeking a rich and full tone for the buck. My price range is limited, but the knowledge im seeking is not...so don't let high prices steer good suggestions away. I'm more concerned with VALUE as opposed to price- whether its $200 or $2000.

-i was quite satisfied with the fender jazz, though i wouldn't mind a tad bit thicker of a sound if possible.
-i recently was offered a black music man stingray in pristine condition for $600 but only had that very second to decide. :( didnt realize it was such a good deal at the time.

Ouch.

I'm pretty happy with my Ibanez bass- it's one of their mid-range models, a 5-string. I played a fancier one that belonged to a friend's gf, and I liked it as well. Both have active electronics, but hers had more knobs & stuff- always good in my book. :) No idea what model hers was, mine's an SR305B DX. Not sure if they make this particular model anymore.

I've nothing but good things to say about my Cort Artisan A4. Excellent build quality and great hardware. A huge tonal range given the 3band EQ - only thing missing is the ability to sweep the mid-range but I can live without that ;)

I picked up a used Modulus "Flea bass" before it became a Flea bass. I love it!! I got it for a nice price (under 1000) -- considering what they sell new ones for. Try one out if you get the chance. I run it straight through my FireWire 410 and often use Ampeg SVX. I couldn't be happier.

How I miss my '63 Jazz Bass... :( ...although my Ric 4001 has some fat sound when run in stereo mode with the Ric-O-Sound kit. But for the funk of it, I would go with a Precision bass with flat-wound strings.

I have an sound gear from Ibanez. I run it through Ampeg SVX and get massive kinds of tone.

I'm not a super bass player, but man I love the feel of my bass.

If I was to get only one bass to record with and wasn't sure what I wanted, I'd get a Fender P. Why? It's a sure bet, there's been more hit record made with that bass than all the others put together, and a P is easy to mix with just about anything. Unless your name is Wooten, it will do just fine.
Buying new at this minute, I'd get an HW-1; cheaper than the MIA and better and more consistent quality than the MIM (some say you can get good MIM, I was unlucky I guess because I bought 2 and returned them both; they were horrible). Or get a CIJ if you don't mind waiting a bit.
No, that wasn't me.

I've got a Yamaha rbx260, which is a bit on the twangy side but has a nice feel and is extremely light weight, and a vintage Gibson EB3. The EB3 has a nice dirty bluesy sound, but I think I would rather have a vintage Jazz Bass.

I've got a Pedulla 5-string Thunderbuzz that I've had for 15 years or so. Instead of fixing my car with an insurance check after a wreck, I dropped $3500 on it. Never regretted it a second. The action on it is so perfect it makes me cry...

I play it through an SWR 400 head and an SWR Goliath II cab.

Variax bass. 500 bucks. 24 different sounds. Okay, around 10 of them are really good, mainly the Fender J's and the P, the Rics, and the Danelectro. I've been running this direct into ampeg svx with great results. For recording, you can't beat it.

Another vote for the Fender P bass. I had a Fender mexican Jazz that i liked but a buddy of mine always had this nice thick low end that was a bit better. He used a P bass.
I'll check out a few basses now and then at a music shop but i seem to always go back to that P bass sound.
