Can anyone help me get this sound?

Hi guys...

Back in my days of using not so legal software (which wasn't all that long ago).. I threw together this track.. using Guitar Rig2 and FM8...

Now that i've gone "legit" i'm about to buy Revalver MkII for the guitar sounds.. but I really am stuck as to how to get the type of synth sounds that I used in that clip.. (i apologise for the crappiness of the drums.. i'm really quite new to all this) ...

Obviously they dont have to be EXACTLY the same - but most of the freeware VSTs i've tried.. just dont seem to have that same richness to them?? or were those presets effects laden? Of course I was only really using the presets that came with them/banks that I could find on this site - I dont really know anything about synth programming...

Since the FM8 is the successor of the FM7 which was an emulation of the Yamaha DX7, I think you want a free DX7 emulation. The next best thing should then be Hexter (which is not anymore available alas...)

Odo at odosynths.com has some freeware and donationware fm synths that could achieve that synth sound. Of course there are a number of ree fm synths such as vivaldi that could do it. The core sound is not that difficult either as a single sound or an arp, but it has a nice wide sound that may require effects.

the richness comes from a number of things, but it seems the delay is offset left to the main line on the right. The delay is also gently lowpass filtered. Perhaps a subtle chorus w/ even a bit of reverb is after the delay.

oatmeal and synth1 could probably get you close, too.
