I'm a guitar player that has been tasked with creating backing tracks for my band. First song is The Cure's Just Like Heaven and I've got no idea what type of keys make those sounds - any help would be appreciated. Second song up with be NIN Head Like A Hole.

Here is what I currently have: TG77, DM5, Axiom 25 (on order), Sonar 5 Studio, Battery 2.

Pretty proficient with midi (been using Sonar since CW3) but have never really dived into synth editing.

That's it but he's playing the guitar line but the sound of the patch sounds about right.

But does that mean I need a Juno-60 type soft sythn?

Not really. It was just meant to give you an idea of what you might do. There's plenty of synths around (free and commercial) that could be used.

What are your plans ? Doing an as exact as possible remake or just something that is fun and easy to play ?
We'll need more info to help you.

Exact as possible remake to use as a backing track for my band (www.romanholidayband.com) for paying gigs. We are starting to add more 80's pop/top 40 tunes and need to add keys and don't want to add another person to the band since only about 20% of the songs will need keys.

Ok,at first i thought you might be like a 2 person band but i listened and heared that you're a whole group.
So how do you plan on synchronizing the backing track to the drummer ? A click track ? Sounds like a lot of hassle.

My suggestion is simple.Just skip the synth parts and play the rest. The synths are'nt that important in that song.

Yup click track on the drummer. There are other songs we are adding (Duran Duran, NIN, etc) that will need keys. We just decided to start with this one first, we would do Just What I Needed but we are probably dropping that from the list. This Love by Maroon5 will also get a key track and click.

It's quite a common practice for cover bands to do use this technique.

Ah,ok. Some drummers has a real problem with that and in this case i thought it was a bit silly to have the whole band playing to a machine just for that small part.

But in that case you could try the TAL UNO 60. It's a brilliant synth. Easy to program and sounds really good. And free too. Gotta love that.

Just did a quick test with Big Ticks Cheese Machine and it fits quite well. Dunno how close to the original it is but it has a nice sound for a Cure cover.

Yep. It's the Cheese Machine
The warm Strings preset. I tweaked it a bit to my liking. There are'nt that many parameters so it should be a breeze to program. And free too. Gotta love that.
