I'm looking for a preferably free acoustic simulator vst effect. I don't mean an acoustic guitar softsynth, just an effect that makes my electric guitar sound like an acoustic (sort of anyway, I know none of them are fully convincing). Just like you see in lots of hardware effects units, only software. Does any such thing exist? I haven't been able to find one in quite a bit of googling and searching here.

that effect on hardware is usually just a comb filter,

And not usually? I'm wondering which ones have "acoustification" features :).

I did a song with an early beta wersion where I used the electric and it made it sound like a sort of dull acoustic;

being the result. Quite a nice sound, somewhere halfway I'll wager

I've sometimes settled for an "cleaner and more sparkly than clean" electric tone. It's not an acoustic, but it fills out the same space on the soundstage that an acoustic would. Only to be used for backing parts, though... soloing or doing main parts and it'll be obvious that no acoustic is present.

In any event, it was pretty simple. Just use a clean, low-output electric tone, artificially double the part, send both through the same amp simulator (using a very clean model) and then adjust the phase so that they're out of phase with one another, going by ear until you get the desired effect. I used BBA's PhaseBug (shameless plug), but you can just offset it. The results aren't bad.

Alternatively-- mic your electric's strings. <shrug> Aim the mic so that you're not picking up too much of the pick attack. If you know the right frequencies (I don't, offhand), you could further notch out the pick attack if needed.

Greg,

Could you give an example dry/wet of this? I have the same intersts as the OP...

Thanks, and no biggie if not, though,

What if you used an IR of an acoustic guitar?

Post

Dunno if that would work. If you had as dry a recording of an electric's strings (with a mic, damping out natural room reverb) and then a bit of a guitar body as a 'space' for convolution, it might work. Hrm...

IRs of acoustic guitar work really well, I find.

dysfunctionz,

Yeah, I find it's amazing that nobody has developed an authentic sounding stompbox acoustic guitar simulator in a software format. There was one that tried a while back (can't remember the name), but it didn't come anywhere close to being realistic. Guitarists have everything else in software format, but this. This has got to be my true holy grail of software apps. I, and many guitarists would be eternally greatful if some developer could pull it off. I know some people will ask "well why not just use an acoustic guitar and mike it"? However, this isn't the point. Besides not having the facilities to do live recording, I would like to have the convienience/ease/no latency of using my electric guitar plugged directly into my computer like I normally would. If any developers are following this thread, please consider this concept. Thank you.

Hey, Greg,

Where'd you get your IR's that you like?

I am assuming you're taking a clean electric and modifying it this way. If so, this would really fill a big gap for us guitar players who don't like playing acoustic or just have electric's only...or at the very least without the means to get a decent mic'd tone from an acoustic.

Thanks a lot,

- Paul

it's not an easy task, but since I would use that effect myself too I might try,

anyway is there a good acoustic guitar simulator in hardware format actually?

Maybe the Roland one but I never tried it, who did?

Hey Paul,

Just a few notes--

I dug up a project with my "phasing" technique, but the project also has some real acoustic (the acoustic is slowly replacing the phased technique guitars). I can post examples shortly (supper's ready!), but to be perfectly honest, it doesn't sound as good as I remembered it sounding. When the "real" acoustic comes in, it's a big difference. Though, I guess I DID already state that it's only for backgrounds, so I guess I shouldn't be apologetic. <chuckle>

For IRs, I'd be curious to get some guitar body ones, too. :)

Well, I just tried it with the Sonar IR's and it sounded terrible - I mean not much difference.

But it was just the quick test. If anyone else wants to try, go for it.
