I have the 1616m since almost two years now.
Short list of pros and cons:
+ Good preamps and Hi-Z Inputs
+ Good converter quality
+ very small and portable for all the i/o it has
+ Can be used to record a full band with an additional adat converter
+ drivers are pretty solid
+ can be used on a desktop too with a cheap pcmcia adapter
- cardbus is a dieing technology, most new laptops come with express card slots only
- Microdock is a bit fragile, could be more robust
- Power FX quality is mediocre and they are unreliable in a lot of hosts
Some of the first Microdocks had a dieing output syndrome. I had to send mine in a couple of months after purchase. Support was good and I received a completely new one after 2 weeks. Newer Microdocks don't seem to have that problem anymore.
EMU's patchmix software isn't for everybody. It's pretty flexible but not too intuitive. I don't use it much anymore, since I set up a few session templates.
All in all, I think it is still a nice card and does what I need it to do. However, if I were to buy an interface now I'd propably rather go firewire for future compatibility. Unfortunately cardbus performance is still better than firewire though.
Possible alternatives to look at would be TC Konnekt24 or the Presonus firepod.
Hope that helps...
