I'm thinking of buying a used MC 505 but am a bit wary because the LCD display is slightly faded. Anyone know if the display is absolutely necessary to using the 505?

yes
and it is a known flaw of the machine, the LCD is crap and dies really soon (went thru 2 of these beasts)
you can maybe manage to lay the preset but you wont do any serious editing nor see the fx name/parameters without the LCD

it would be pretty hard to use without the lcd, yes.
