Here are a bunch of audio demos from the upcoming release of Steven Slate Drums 1.5 Elite Mixer Series. The Elite Mixer Series drums were custom made for, and beta tested by some of the biggest names in the mixing industry. The Elite Mixer Series adds 11 new snares, 7 new kicks, and two new sets of toms to the already 11 kicks, 14 snares, and two tom sets that are already included in Steven Slate Drums. It also adds the new Z4 real room ambience samples which provide adjustable, preprocessed room tones for each sample set. Wow. These sound too good to be true.

Was anything added to the track or master bus on the above mp3's? I guess what I'm asking is how "out of the box" are the sounds compared to those 4 demos?

I think you guys really nailed it for ready-to-go and "no more mixing needed" drum sounds.

For those of us who are primarily writing-centric, wonderful sounding "out of the box" drum sounds are like a gift from the divine.

I'd like to hear the dry samples without any reverb added. I'm only interested in minimal ambience samples, no matter how good the drums sound.

I think the ambience is a second layer that can be added or taken off. The last half of some of the demos show a pre/post ambience thing. I don't like them dry, but I see how having the option, rather than it being forced, is useful for either wanting to tweak (dry) or wanting to just load and go (ambient).

I guess we'll have to wait for Joel to respond...

and you are correct, you can use Steven Slate Drums SUPER DRY by using the Z3 sets, or you can have what I call "natural" sounding drums by using the Z1 sets which have some overhead mics mixed in to make them very dimensional. Then there are the Z2s which have room ambience already mixed in. BUT THEN, new in 1.5 is the Z4 which is JUST the room ambience (preprocessed with vintage 1176s and Pultecs mind you!) and you can mix the Z4 and the Z1 to get as much or little ambience as you want. Check this demo out, it shows the variable ambience very well:

Wow, that shows you how crucial sample replacement is in modern mixing! Sounds very good.

This is wav/drumagog only, right? No sampler formats?

Yeah,

For the moment, I think it's only wav/drumagog. It's not too hard to make a Battery/Kontakt/fav-sampler instrument, though.

Hey, Joel - How many velocity hits per drum hit are there?

Well, I do enjoy putting together my own Kontakt drums - BUT! - with something this complex, I'd rather at least start with the developers' orignal intent. Seems like a massive undertaking to do oneself.

Don't waste time making Kontakt or Battery or Halion or EXS mappings... Because we're on it! And it is pretty massive, especially when realizing that each of the hundreds of sample sets is recorded in four different room sizes including the Z4 real room ambience samples. It will be out September and it will be called Steven Slate Drums V2. You'll be able to get it at various major music chains as well. It will have a VERY detailed cymbal pack, all cymbals Steven recorded to 2 inch tape just like the hits to give them the warmth and sizzle of classic sounding drums on classic records. We are beta testing the 2.0 stuff now and its just incredible. No leakage from other mics, no chaining a bunch of compression or eq, its all "done". Choose from over 20 snares, 17 kicks, 4 sets of toms, then choose your room size, choose whether you want your snare open or damp, choose how much room ambience you want, and then start playing! Its also quite cool using the same drums as you hear on the radio. Steven started out in the drum sample business by making drum samples for the major mixers in LA and NYC. I'm so excited about this product, I can't wait for it to be done because I write a lot of songs and can't afford the time and money of a real drummer each time. I'll keep everyone updated, but for now, the new 1.5 ELITE MIXER EDITION will be on the site soon

So Joel,

It won't force you to choose just a predetermined kit, right?

For the Kontakt mappings you can easily swap snare, kick, cymbals, all individually and of course send them to separate outs, right?

Just reaching here and not sure that I really need this or even want it, but can you send each "z" layer to its own output? Say, dry snare to one output, and room snare ambience to another?

Thanks, and sorry to bother you with the details, but anyone writing pop/rock has got to be stupid *not* to check out your offering. Though some might need to wait until you've got the sampler mappings done...

You will DEFINITELY be able to swap kicks/snares/toms freely.. I have to find out about the ambience samples and whether they can be ported to their own track. I know the ambience amount will be adjustable, and I can tell you the sound of the real room ambience has been pre tweaked and sounds fantastic, unlike any "room" sound you've heard. I don't know much about Kontakt but our sampler programmer said something about trying to add the Z4 ambience to the modulation function. I will have him check this thread out too.

BTW we just started the redo of the site, check it out, I picked out the cool new color scheme! There are a ton more audio demos, including the new Elite Mixer demos coming soon.

Also, and this is a biggie: Who here has experience opening Kontakt libraries in Halion, EXS, or any other software samplers? How well do other libraries open up Kontakt libraries? Or is there another sampler which transfers better when opening its libraries in other samplers? Thanks guys,
