I just bought a sampler! No, a real one!

Yeah just grabbed myself an EMU ESI-32

Wow, my first real peice of hardware gear I can actually appreciate.
I was initially looking for a software sampler but kontakt, halion and such were just too pricey for me. I am using Highlife but thought what the heck, for £40 quid on an ESI32 why not.

Looking forward to receiving it and giving it a good thrashing
Never owned a hardware sampler before and it feels kinda refreshing to try something different. Things won't be as easy as on its software counterparts but all that means for me is that hopefully I put more effort and thought into what I'm doing instead of just throwing 'stuff'(samples) in and hoping it will work, if it doesn't throwing something else in instantly replacing it and trying that.

Hey, yeah I thought for the price of a new software sampler why not just get a second hand hardware sampler. I still have change left from £100 to get some other goodies now! and that £100 wouldn't of got me what I wanted in a software sampler. How ironic is that. Especially when we look at how much these hardware things cost new (as you pointed out)

As far as I know it was bog standard, it was an ebay bargain and listed simply as "this sampler is in great working condition" on the description page with a picture. So it could have everything! or it could have nothing!

there's one on US Ebay with 32 megs of ram, and a buy it now for $130
one with a scsi drive is at $150 atm.

That I can believe. UK Ebay auctions get so overpriced for synth and sampler gear it's unreal.

I used to have an ESI32 and ESI4000. Just used it to play back the factory programs. Much too difficult to use in full depth (and I also had some EMU modules which I could tweak without a problem, so I did try). I found the sample/program management a bit confusing.

+ don't mention loading times !

Good stuff!I've just started using the sampler on my RS7000 and i love it!It has something like recycle built into so i've been loading loops into it and slicing them up,the loop is then sequenced!Great for breakbeat

It's opened up a lot of scope for sound design.Hadn't really worked with samples before but i will be from now on

try using the S2000 with its digital watch screen & 2 letter abbreviation's for all the editing options


you can got software to help out though


the presets that come with the E-MU are great (that's if the disks come with it)

if your not happy with it, i'll give ya £40 for it

Had that one too ! Though I liked the sound of it.

Before that I had a Roland S220. Also had a S760 at some point but I found them all too difficult to use.

The one I found easiest to use and edit was my Ensoniq EPS16+. I still have +1000 floppies laying arround. Must dump them sometime.

Hey, so it arrived today! mental stuff. Just been having a play as I've only just sat down today. Already sampled from an old vinyl and turn something into a bass sound. As people have said, really nice filters!

It turns out it came with the SCSI card in it too! What does that mean for me sampling wise?

Small problem, the sample length keeps restting itself back to 0.1 sec, anyone know why it does that. So when I come to record a sample it only records 0.1 sec so I have to go back into sample setup and revert it back to it's maximum lenght which is kind of a pain. No info in the manual either about that.
