Can anybody recommend a free/cheap soundfont player for Mac that can play SF2 and SFZ?

I did some Google and VST searches but couldn't find anything, only SF2 players. I was looking for a plug-in that supports SFZ, since I kind of like being able to edit the soundfont using a text editor.

If SFZ on Mac is a no-go, any pointers to

SFZ is PC only.

Re SF2 : What host are you using?

If it can host Audio Units, the in-built DLS Music Device (on all macs) can load soundfonts.

There's also a standalone instrument called SimpleSynth ... but it's not Intel-ready

Otherwise : there are two free Pluggo instruments, FluidsynthZERO and FluidsynthHEX here
They're PPC, not Intel yet, so you'd need to install an older version of (also free) Pluggo Runtime - version 3.5.4 should be fine - as long as you haven't got an Intel computer, in which case Fluidsynth won't be an option.

Finally, there's some reasonably cheap shareware VST/AU sampler/soundfont players, BS-1 and BS-16, here

sfz format sample sets can be played on Mac with Dimension Pro, Dimension LE, or Rapture. Soundfonts can be played by a nimber of Mac players (Kontakt, BS-16, and others).

Chicken translator for Mac may be able to translate them into something you already have. The newest Kontakt update can play both sfz and sf2, but it is neither free, cheap, nor easy to use.

I would personally go with Rapture given the options, but of course its not exactly *cheap*. Still, Cakewalk has been running some good sales lately, maybe its still available at a reduced price.

Thanks everybody for the info! I am using/ trying to use GarageBand at the moment; not liking it too much.
