Hello,
As the thread says, any Axon MIDI guitar users out there? I would like to buy one, either - the Axon AX 100 or the AX 50 USB. Seeing I am a guitar player and a crap keyboard player, it's about time I did. I have read favourable AX 50 reviews but nothing on the AX 100. Anyone out there with some useful information on both units would be much appreciated. Basically, do they perform the same? Is one better? How good can it get the job done? My playing style is in the Vai/Satriani vein. I should point out that it is not possible for me to go into a shop and try as none around my area have them.
Plus, I've been told that Piezo pickups are best to use as far as the pickup for the unit goes. Any recommendations?

At this point in time I'd suggest waiting to see what the Roland VG-99 can do. It has on board modeling - two processors, and midi but with an external sound module. It will be interesting to see if it's a contender.

I don't think the Roland can replace something like the Axon. For one, it lacks the separate inputs per string. Oops, no it doesn't.
As to piezo pickups, they are best, however, installing them is not trivial. I think any will work for just the guitar to MIDI conversion, but if you want to use them for their sounds, you need to look more carefully. Installing piezo pickups on an electric requires some extra routing in the guitar body, as well as swapping out the saddles on the bridge and drilling some holes in it (or getting a replacement bridge). Graphtech's Ghost system is one of the better known ones, and there's lots of info on the website.

Hey there,
I have a Roland GI-20, and it works nearly perfectly for me. Good response time and pitch tracking. The only place it really falls down is when playing piano or mallets where it plays double notes, somewhat alleviated by using a softer pick. I can recommend it, like. I'd like to try an Axon for pianos, sure. I think that you won't be dissapointed whichever system you choose, midi guitar is my instrument of choice.
Wishing you satisfying music, nix

I have several midi guitar systems...a Roland GK3/GR50 setup,
a Shadow system and a Yamaha EZ-EG. They all work great but
have their individual strengths and weaknesses. I've not used the Axxon but, from what I've been told, in order to get any
improvement over a Roland based system you must use piezo
pickups which, as stated above, are difficult to install
and not cheap. Although I believe some guitars such as
Brian Moore, Godin and the latest offering from Carvin
come with them factory installed. I would love a VG-99
but its awfully pricey...maybe in a couple of years!
Cheers.....CL
