The webpage for Extreme Sample Converter (www.extranslator.com) shows S1000 import only.

Chickensys sucks. I tried the demo - doesnt do anything. Doesnt export - has incomplete features, doesnt work at all...

There's some akai utility out there called akaidisk or something, but its for unix machines only...

Post

I tried AWave studio - it outputs in pulsar format instead of akai format. Plus, i dont know the exact extension of the akai 1000 format - i think its .ak1 but i'm not sure.

I can't believe we're in 2007 and can't convert to a 90s era sampler.

Yea I wasnt too sure about CST either.. I'm pretty sure theres a way to do this. I will let you know if I remember.

Oh and BTW AKAI format also is AKP & ISO..

hmm see this..

Translator (from the company called Chicken Systems) is the only utility that converts into Akai S-100 format. It can write and read and format Akai disks fine.

www.chickensys.com

My experience with the demo (Windows) was completely successful with converting into Akai S-1000. This is what I did.

Downloaded the demo
Installed it, started it up
Put in a Akai-formatted ZipDisk
Found a nice Kontakt string patch (.nki file)
Dragged it from the right and dropped it on the left, on Partition A
It created a Volume called STRONG SRTG (the name of the .nki file)
It wrote one Akai Program called STRONG STRG, and 42 samples (21 -L and 22 -R, since the Kontakt file used stereo samples)
I took the ZipDisk out, put it in the ZipDrive hooked up to my S-1000.
Loaded it up, played it - sounded great

keyman_sam, it sounds like you didn't understand what to do, or perhaps you downloaded the Mac demo, which doesn't convert into Akai S-1000 yet.

I recommend Translator highly for converting into S-1000.

There was none until we (Chicken Systems) invented the .ak1 and .ak3 formats 7 years ago. The Akai S-1000 can't read it, of course - it's just for the purpose of file sharing (not the pirate type!).

You can! Translator does it fine. If you have questions, give me a ring at 320-235-9798 or 800-877-6377. Or email me at garth@chickensys.com

Well, not really.

.AKP is Akai S-5000, not S-1x/3x/2x.

S-1x/2x/3x don't use DOS format, they use a proprietary one. Thus anyone who wants to write things into S-1000 format needs to 1) write the format correctly and 2) write to the special disk as well.

(There is a format called MESA, which the S2x/S3k can use with the MESA software, but lets put that aside for the moment.)

Translator can do both, it's the only one that does both. If you had trouble using it, you must have not read the manual or didn't know what you were doing. (I'm not being mean, I'm just saying it can be done - if you don't understand, just ask for clarification.)

.AKP won't do anything with S-1000 stuff. It's a different piece of equipment.

Hello there! First of all, thanks for trying to help me out. There are only very few developers who take time in helping their customers individually. Hats off to you for this.

Second, I did read the manual. I didn't try to write it to a zip disk. i want it to write a .ak1/3 file to my computer, say, in desktop. Then, I'd test to see if it works by convert loading into gigastudio. the dialog box showed as if it was converting, but the output file wasnt there. When i converted a single wave into akai format, it did that successfully.

Also, the converter you provided for fantom doesnt work that well either. I converted an original roland CD (Ultimate Strings) to read into my fantom S (after reading all the manuals). When i wrote directly into card, it didnt work at all. When i wrote into the archive, then to card, it half worked. The samples were written properly with loop info, but i had to manually select the samples and create multisamples and then patches.

Next, the converter you provided for Fusion doesnt work that well either. I converted a bunch of patches from an ORIGINAL akai CD (EWQL Brass) for S5000 into the fusion format. It didn't work. The samples weren't mapped properly, none of the mod sources were mapped. It was complete trash.

I'm not trying to put down your company. I'm simply clarifying things on my side. I'm not the only one to complain either. Go over to the fantomized forums and do a search for sample conversion. Pretty much no one could completely convert any roland CD or anything at all into the fantom format.

I also tried CDXtract (v3) and Extreme Sample Converter. CDXtract did the best job of converting soundfonts into .gig files. It also converted a bunch of other instruments into .gig format (with 80% success, which is good enough for me).

And a lot of the functions in the Chicken software system (like script mapping, instrument wizard) doesnt work. Its not completed. I don't know why you'd include options that don't function at all. Better that someone have a positive experience on trying out the things that exists rather than trying out incomplete features and getting disappointed.

Also, is there any way for a time-limited trial? I try out different things to see if it works, but everytime i have to wait for half an hour before i can try something again...

The best demo limitation, imo, would be ESC's. your samples are written with a short bust of audible noise somewhere in the wave files. But you can convert anything you want. This way, i can test to see if your software fully works, and THEn buy it.

Thanks for the kind words. Let's go!

That test isn't a real-world test. If someone wanted to convert something into Gigastudio, they'd simply convert the source format into Gigstudio. They wouldn't convert it into a temporary .ak1 file, then go into Giga.

BTW, I should note that most LA film composers used Roland S-760's for all the '90's. They switched to GigaStudio when it got hot, and most used Translator to convert their Roland libraries to Giga format. That's what most of them (when they use Giga) use today.

This is the Fantom Convertor - which is not neceesarily Translator. It's a different beast.

I'd like to take a look at that; feel free to place a Bug Report. I saw that you tried this in JANUARY. See below.

The Fantom S uses a SmartMedia card which can be a bear to use - SLOW. It's actually best to do what you did - go to an archive, then write it all at once to the card.

That possibly could be the problem, I can't be sure. But I will say that we tested Roland CD after Roland CD when we developed FC and we got great results. Roland even tested it for us and was very satisfied with it.

We are always happy to deal with individual issues; simply contact us.

Again, Alesis (who actually is Akai now) cooperated in testing this quite a bit. Your experience was not their experience, neither is it ours, nor is it our customers.

The Fusion Convertor is actually Alesis' product, they put their name on it.

Again, these aren't Translator per se, and I'm happy to look at anything you had an issue with. We do have EWQL (actually it's just Quantum Leap, it was pre-EW) Brass and I'll check it out (see below). What AKP file did you try?
keyman_sam wrote:Go over to the fantomized forums and do a search for sample conversion. Pretty much no one could completely convert any roland CD or anything at all into the fantom format.
I actually couldn't find many at all. Well, there was one (Stevie), who posted quite frequntly, but we already dealt with the guy a long time ago. A couple were from you (the Ultimate Strings thing). There were a couple positive notes about our Fantom Convertor.

Our experience was with Fantom was that most Fantom owners didn't bother do deal with the sampling part. We spent the better half of a year cramming the old Roland format into the Fantom limited one, with better success then Roland did themselves or the new YASE thing that recently came out.

Forums like Fantomized have 4-5 people that always post, most are unfamiliar with things.

Regarding converting into Alesis and Fantom (which is an extension of our topic since we were only talking about Akai S-1000), I actually have lots of experience with this. I gig frequently with both my Fusion and Fantom, and I map things out on a regular basis on both keyboards, and I convert many sounds into my touring rig. Personaly, I'm very happy with both conversions. If they didn't work, I'd know about it!

I'll do this - my Fantom and Fusion are at the gig site, they'll be back in Monday, and I'll check your experiences out the best I can. Fair?
keyman_sam wrote:And a lot of the functions in the Chicken software system (like script mapping, instrument wizard) doesnt work. Its not completed. I don't know why you'd include options that don't function at all.
We don't! I can't think why we'd do that either. =) Many of our customer use the Script Mapper frequently. The "Instrument Wizard" (soon to be called the "Chizard") was something that was accidentally exposed in the Demo and is obviously not completed. It's not in the commercial version. I'll update the Free program Monday to get rid of that exposure.

Now, you say "a lot of functions (in Translator) don't work"? I'm sorry, that's ridiculous. Feel free to make a list and post it here.

OK, lastly, give us a call or email privately so we can ascertain what you actually did. Your experience isn't typical at all.

I don't mean to contridict you, but my staff along with Rolands and Alesis's (and our customers) have a different experience - with Translator, adn with the other programs that you mentioned.

As you mentioned at the start of the post, if you like our responsiveness, use our system and we can easily sort out your issues. They are likely minor.

Hope this helps!

Do you have a S-1000?

ACtually, sorry, I didn't see above.

Just use Translator to convert straight into Fantom-S format. Use the Single Sample Map function to specify how you want the waves to be arranged (you said you didn't need anything fancy) and right-click on the folder containing the waves on the left, and select Fantom as the destination you want to convert to.

My Fantom isn't here right now so I can't test it.
