Hi I'm an electro producer and want to get a good sounding vocoder to achieve vocals like kraftwerk, anthony rother et al. but i really dont know what makes a good vocoder or a bad one? do you have to spend big to get a great sound?
any help much appreciated

why d'you want a hardware vocoder in the first place? are you sure you really need one?

If you go for software sollutions (which is imho more usefull) be sure to try Vocov Out. It's by the way free =)

I use Eosis ELS Vocoder (has dongle and costs 279.00usd) and love it, also use NI's Vokator occasionally.

+2 for ELS Vocoder, I have the latest beta with the ability to use an external synth as a carrier. Amazing what can be done using Zebra or Cameleon 5000 as the synth.
I also have an MS-2000 which has a built in vocoder you can get one for, maybe $300. It's cool but I still use the ELS vocoder more often.
For a nice analog vocoder check out the Roland SVC-350, using a Juno-106 as the carrier you can get the most lush sounding vocoding I've ever heard.
or a Korg VC-10, thats what Skinny Puppy used for the vocoder on Warlock.

Thanks! in response to whyterabbyt, i dont know if i want a hardware one! just want something that works well for recording my own vocals in and vocoding them, be it software or hardware

I like Eiosis' ELS Vocoder. Sounds superb and offers very good control over lots of aspects of the process. For simpler stuff I have Akai's elderly but still excellent DC Vocoder. And when using Reason there's the BV-512, lots of fun to experiment with. All are software.

The alesis Micron is the best stereo vocoder i know of..
I use that or a custom software patch for tassman i created. I hate those stand alone software vocoders that don't let you supply your own carrier synth. Most have built in synths that blow. The micron & tassman let you use your already great and better sounding synths.

i was going to ask about that...the only vocoders i've use are a moog analog (a long time ago) and the vocoder in the Nord Micro Mod...the Nord allows you to patch different bands around, actually pretty much emulates a standard analog vocoder...i was wondering if there are vst vocoders that give you the ability to patch the mod bands to different carrier bands, if there are ones with more than 16 bands, and indeed: can you supply your own mod and carrier (seems to defeat the purpose if you can't tbh)vieris wrote:I hate those stand alone software vocoders that don't let you supply your own carrier synth.

I don't know if the latest version has been released yet but I have been using external synths as a carrier with the ELS vocoder for a while. In fact you can use two external synths simultaneously. It has 22 bands and the formant matrix is something I haven't seen in many hardware vocoders let alone software.

I just listened to some kraftwerk for you.. and I'm going to say that I'd have to recommend a talk box. I bought a Banshee Talkbox back in June and I love it. Here is a link to a video so you can see what one does in case you didn't know.
