Line in problem (moved to computer setup)

I am having a problem with my line-in. I'm not sure what it is but when I plug in my synthesizer through the line-in, it will record in audacity, but you can't hear it until after it's recorded and you press play. Like.. I can't play live and hear it through my pc speakers. Why is this?
